וַיְהִי דְּבַר־יְהֹוָה אֶל־יוֹנָה בֶן־אֲמִתַּי לֵאמֹר׃

The word of Hashem came to Yona son of Amitai:

Jonah 1:1

וַיְהִי דְבַר־יְהֹוָה אֶל־יוֹנָה שֵׁנִית לֵאמֹר׃

The word of Hashem came to Yona a second time:

Jonah 3:1

This map features the locations mentioned in the Book of Jonah Chapters 1 and 3.

    1. God commands Yonah to go the city of Ninveh and speak to its inhabitants in order to get them to repent of their evil ways (Jonah 1:2). Though at first he runs away, Yonah ultimately follows God’s command. Because of his prophecy, the people of Ninveh repent and are saved from destruction (Jonah 3:1-10). ‌
    2. Instead of going to Ninveh as God had commanded, Yonah first runs away. He flees to the port city of Yaffo (Joppa) in order to escape his mission, where he gets on a boat heading towards Tarshish (Jonah 1:3).
    3. It is not clear where exactly Tarshish was. Some identify its location as the city of Tarsus in Turkey.
