60:2   When he fought with AramNaharaim

As king of Israel, David has to contend with neighboring countries, sometimes as allies but often as enemies. The Land of Israel is surrounded by other countries on three sides. To the south, Israel borders Egypt. In ancient times, the eastern lands were dominated by the kingdoms of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Bashan, and Aram. In the northeast was Aram Naharaim, the land from which Avraham began his journey towards the Promised Land. As recorded in the books of Shmuel and Divrei Hayamim, David conducts battles and expands his kingdom to include the eastern bank of the Jordan River, where the tribes of Reuven, Gad and Menashe had settled hundreds of years earlier. This verse makes reference to some of the battles David fights against his neighbors.

3O Hashem, You have rejected us, You have made a breach in us; You have been angry; restore us!

4You have made the land quake; You have torn it open. Mend its fissures, for it is collapsing.

5You have made Your people suffer hardship; You have given us wine that makes us reel.

6Give those who fear You because of Your truth a banner for rallying. Selah.

7That those whom You love might be rescued, deliver with Your right hand and answer me.

8Hashem promised in His sanctuary that I would exultingly divide up Shechem, and measure the Valley of Sukkoth;

9Gilad and Menashe would be mine, Efraim my chief stronghold, Yehuda my scepter;

10Moab would be my washbasin; on Edom I would cast my shoe; acclaim me, O Philistia!

11Would that I were brought to the bastion! Would that I were led to Edom!

12But You have rejected us, O Hashem; Hashem, You do not march with our armies.

13Grant us Your aid against the foe, for the help of man is worthless.

14With Hashem we shall triumph; He will trample our foes.
