Chapter 2

1Hashem spoke to Moshe and Aharon, saying:

אוַיְדַבֵּר יְהֹוָה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה וְאֶל־אַהֲרֹן לֵאמֹר׃

2The Israelites shall camp each with his standard, under the banners of their ancestral house; they shall camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance.

באִישׁ עַל־דִּגְלוֹ בְאֹתֹת לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם יַחֲנוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִנֶּגֶד סָבִיב לְאֹהֶל־מוֹעֵד יַחֲנוּ׃

3Camped on the front, or east side: the standard of the division of Yehuda, troop by troop. Chieftain of the Judites: Nachshon son of Aminadav.

v'-ha-kho-NEEM KAY-d'-mah miz-RA-khah DE-gel ma-kha-NAY y'-hu-DAH l'-tziv-o-TAM v'-na-SEE liv-NAY y'-hu-DAH nakh-SHON ben a-mee-na-DAV

גוְהַחֹנִים קֵדְמָה מִזְרָחָה דֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה יְהוּדָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי יְהוּדָה נַחְשׁוֹן בֶּן־עַמִּינָדָב׃

2:3 The standard of the division of Yehuda

As the forebear of the Davidic dynasty, Yehuda is given a place of honor in the Israelite camp. When the camp is not in motion, the tribe of Yehuda camps to the east of the Mishkan, which is considered the front, as it is the direction of the rising sun. And when they travel, the tribe of Yehuda goes in front, leading the Nation on its journey through the desert. As Yehuda led the Nation of Israel to the Promised Land, his descendant, the Mashiach ben David, will similarly gather the Children of Israel from all over the world and bring them back to Eretz Yisrael.

4His troop, as enrolled: 74,600.

דוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם אַרְבָּעָה וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

5Camping next to it: The tribe of Yissachar. Chieftain of the Issacharites: Netanel son of Zuar.

הוְהַחֹנִים עָלָיו מַטֵּה יִשָּׂשכָר וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי יִשָּׂשכָר נְתַנְאֵל בֶּן־צוּעָר׃

6His troop, as enrolled: 54,400.

ווּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדָיו אַרְבָּעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

7The tribe of Zevulun. Chieftain of the Zebulunites: Eliav son of Helon.

זמַטֵּה זְבוּלֻן וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי זְבוּלֻן אֱלִיאָב בֶּן־חֵלֹן׃

8His troop, as enrolled: 57,400.

חוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדָיו שִׁבְעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

9The total enrolled in the division of Yehuda: 186,400, for all troops. These shall march first.

טכָּל־הַפְּקֻדִים לְמַחֲנֵה יְהוּדָה מְאַת אֶלֶף וּשְׁמֹנִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשֶׁת־אֲלָפִים וְאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹת לְצִבְאֹתָם רִאשֹׁנָה יִסָּעוּ׃

10On the south: the standard of the division of Reuven, troop by troop. Chieftain of the Reubenites: Elitzur son of Shedeur.

ידֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן תֵּימָנָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי רְאוּבֵן אֱלִיצוּר בֶּן־שְׁדֵיאוּר׃

11His troop, as enrolled: 46,500.

יאוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדָיו שִׁשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

12Camping next to it: The tribe of Shimon. Chieftain of the Simeonites: Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

יבוְהַחוֹנִם עָלָיו מַטֵּה שִׁמְעוֹן וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי שִׁמְעוֹן שְׁלֻמִיאֵל בֶּן־צוּרִי־שַׁדָּי׃

13His troop, as enrolled: 59,300.

יגוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם תִּשְׁעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

14And the tribe of Gad. Chieftain of the Gadites: Elyasaf son of Reuel.

ידוְמַטֵּה גָּד וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי גָד אֶלְיָסָף בֶּן־רְעוּאֵל׃

15His troop, as enrolled: 45,650.

טווּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם חֲמִשָּׁה וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים׃

16The total enrolled in the division of Reuven: 151,450, for all troops. These shall march second.

טזכָּל־הַפְּקֻדִים לְמַחֲנֵה רְאוּבֵן מְאַת אֶלֶף וְאֶחָד וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע־מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים לְצִבְאֹתָם וּשְׁנִיִּם יִסָּעוּ׃

17Then, midway between the divisions, the Tent of Meeting, the division of the Leviim, shall move. As they camp, so they shall march, each in position, by their standards.

יזוְנָסַע אֹהֶל־מוֹעֵד מַחֲנֵה הַלְוִיִּם בְּתוֹךְ הַמַּחֲנֹת כַּאֲשֶׁר יַחֲנוּ כֵּן יִסָּעוּ אִישׁ עַל־יָדוֹ לְדִגְלֵיהֶם׃

18On the west: the standard of the division of Efraim, troop by troop. Chieftain of the Ephraimites: Elishama son of Ammihud.

יחדֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה אֶפְרַיִם לְצִבְאֹתָם יָמָּה וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי אֶפְרַיִם אֱלִישָׁמָע בֶּן־עַמִּיהוּד׃

19His troop, as enrolled: 40,500.

יטוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם אַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

20Next to it: The tribe of Menashe. Chieftain of the Manassites: Gamliel son of Pedahzur.

כוְעָלָיו מַטֵּה מְנַשֶּׁה וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי מְנַשֶּׁה גַּמְלִיאֵל בֶּן־פְּדָהצוּר׃

21His troop, as enrolled: 32,200.

כאוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁנַיִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וּמָאתָיִם׃

22And the tribe of Binyamin. Chieftain of the Benjaminites: Avidan son of Gideoni.

כבוּמַטֵּה בִּנְיָמִן וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי בִנְיָמִן אֲבִידָן בֶּן־גִּדְעֹנִי׃

23His troop, as enrolled: 35,400.

כגוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם חֲמִשָּׁה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

24The total enrolled in the division of Efraim: 108,100 for all troops. These shall march third.

כדכָּל־הַפְּקֻדִים לְמַחֲנֵה אֶפְרַיִם מְאַת אֶלֶף וּשְׁמֹנַת־אֲלָפִים וּמֵאָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וּשְׁלִשִׁים יִסָּעוּ׃

25On the north: the standard of the division of Dan, troop by troop. Chieftain of the Danites: Achiezer son of Ammishaddai.

כהדֶּגֶל מַחֲנֵה דָן צָפֹנָה לְצִבְאֹתָם וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי דָן אֲחִיעֶזֶר בֶּן־עַמִּישַׁדָּי׃

26His troop, as enrolled: 62,700.

כווּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁנַיִם וְשִׁשִּׁים אֶלֶף וּשְׁבַע מֵאוֹת׃

27Camping next to it: The tribe of Asher. Chieftain of the Asherites: Pagiel son of Ochran.

כזוְהַחֹנִים עָלָיו מַטֵּה אָשֵׁר וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי אָשֵׁר פַּגְעִיאֵל בֶּן־עָכְרָן׃

28His troop, as enrolled: 41,500.

כחוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם אֶחָד וְאַרְבָּעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃

29And the tribe of Naftali. Chieftain of the Naphtalites: Achira son of Enan.

כטוּמַטֵּה נַפְתָּלִי וְנָשִׂיא לִבְנֵי נַפְתָּלִי אֲחִירַע בֶּן־עֵינָן׃

30His troop, as enrolled: 53,400.

לוּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקֻדֵיהֶם שְׁלֹשָׁה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְאַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת׃

31The total enrolled in the division of Dan: 157,600. These shall march last, by their standards.

לאכָּל־הַפְּקֻדִים לְמַחֲנֵה דָן מְאַת אֶלֶף וְשִׁבְעָה וַחֲמִשִּׁים אֶלֶף וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת לָאַחֲרֹנָה יִסְעוּ לְדִגְלֵיהֶם׃

32Those are the enrollments of the Israelites by ancestral houses. The total enrolled in the divisions, for all troops: 603,550.

לבאֵלֶּה פְּקוּדֵי בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם כָּל־פְּקוּדֵי הַמַּחֲנֹת לְצִבְאֹתָם שֵׁשׁ־מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים׃

33The Leviim, however, were not recorded among the Israelites, as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

לגוְהַלְוִיִּם לֹא הָתְפָּקְדוּ בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהֹוָה אֶת־מֹשֶׁה׃

34The Israelites did accordingly; just as Hashem had commanded Moshe, so they camped by their standards, and so they marched, each with his clan according to his ancestral house.

לדוַיַּעֲשׂוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּה יְהֹוָה אֶת־מֹשֶׁה כֵּן־חָנוּ לְדִגְלֵיהֶם וְכֵן נָסָעוּ אִישׁ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָיו עַל־בֵּית אֲבֹתָיו׃
