1Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying:

2Take Aharon along with his sons, and the vestments, the anointing oil, the bull of sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread;

3and assemble the whole community at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

8:3 And assemble the whole community at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting

The entrance of the Tent of Meeting housed the Mishkan, the altar and the laver, and was not large enough to accommodate six hundred thousand people. Rashi comments that this is one of the miraculous instances where a small area contained many people. This miracle repeated itself daily in the Beit Hamikdash, and is one of the incredible features of Eretz Yisrael in general (see Ezekiel 20:6 and Daniel 11:41). The Sages (Ethics of the Fathers 5:7) recount that in the Beit Hamikdash, “the people stood pressed together, yet they found ample space to prostrate themselves… and no one ever said to his fellow, ‘There is not enough room for me to spend the night in Jerusalem.’” One of the unique metaphysical properties of Israel in general, and Yerushalayim and the Temple Mount specifically, is that they expand to hold all their inhabitants and visitors.

4Moshe did as Hashem commanded him. And when the community was assembled at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

5Moshe said to the community, “This is what Hashem has commanded to be done.”

6Then Moshe brought Aharon and his sons forward and washed them with water.

7He put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him, girding him with the decorated band with which he tied it to him.

8He put the breastpiece on him, and put into the breastpiece the Urim and Thummim.

9And he set the headdress on his head; and on the headdress, in front, he put the gold frontlet, the holy diadem—as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

10Moshe took the anointing oil and anointed the Mishkan and all that was in it, thus consecrating them.

va-yi-KAKH mo-SHEH et SHE-men ha-mish-KHAH va-yim-SHAKH et ha-mish-KAN v'-et kol a-sher BO vai-ka-DAYSH o-TAM

11He sprinkled some of it on the mizbayach seven times, anointing the mizbayach, all its utensils, and the laver with its stand, to consecrate them.

12He poured some of the anointing oil upon Aharon's head and anointed him, to consecrate him.

va-yi-TZOK mi-SHE-men ha-mish-KHAH AL ROSH a-ha-RON va-yim-SHAKH o-TO l'-ka-d'-SHO

13Moshe then brought Aharon's sons forward, clothed them in tunics, girded them with sashes, and wound turbans upon them, as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

14He led forward the bull of sin offering. Aharon and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bull of sin offering,

15and it was slaughtered. Moshe took the blood and with his finger put some on each of the horns of the mizbayach, cleansing the mizbayach; then he poured out the blood at the base of the mizbayach. Thus he consecrated it in order to make expiation upon it.

16Moshe then took all the fat that was about the entrails, and the protuberance of the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat, and turned them into smoke on the mizbayach.

17The rest of the bull, its hide, its flesh, and its dung, he put to the fire outside the camp—as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

18Then he brought forward the ram of burnt offering. Aharon and his sons laid their hands upon the ram's head,

19and it was slaughtered. Moshe dashed the blood against all sides of the mizbayach.

20The ram was cut up into sections and Moshe turned the head, the sections, and the suet into smoke on the mizbayach;

21Moshe washed the entrails and the legs with water and turned all of the ram into smoke. That was a burnt offering for a pleasing odor, an offering by fire to Hashem—as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

22He brought forward the second ram, the ram of ordination. Aharon and his sons laid their hands upon the ram's head,

23and it was slaughtered. Moshe took some of its blood and put it on the ridge of Aharon's right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.

24Moshe then brought forward the sons of Aharon, and put some of the blood on the ridges of their right ears, and on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet; and the rest of the blood Moshe dashed against every side of the mizbayach.

25He took the fat—the broad tail, all the fat about the entrails, the protuberance of the liver, and the two kidneys and their fat—and the right thigh.

26From the basket of unleavened bread that was before Hashem, he took one cake of unleavened bread, one cake of oil bread, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat parts and on the right thigh.

27He placed all these on the palms of Aharon and on the palms of his sons, and elevated them as an elevation offering before Hashem.

28Then Moshe took them from their hands and turned them into smoke on the mizbayach with the burnt offering. This was an ordination offering for a pleasing odor; it was an offering by fire to Hashem.

29Moshe took the breast and elevated it as an elevation offering before Hashem; it was Moshe' portion of the ram of ordination—as Hashem had commanded Moshe.

30And Moshe took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the mizbayach and sprinkled it upon Aharon and upon his vestments, and also upon his sons and upon their vestments. Thus he consecrated Aharon and his vestments, and also his sons and their vestments.

31Moshe said to Aharon and his sons: Boil the flesh at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of ordination—as I commanded: Aharon and his sons shall eat it;

32and what is left over of the flesh and the bread you shall consume in fire.

33You shall not go outside the entrance of the Tent of Meeting for seven days, until the day that your period of ordination is completed. For your ordination will require seven days.

34Everything done today, Hashem has commanded to be done [seven days], to make expiation for you.

35You shall remain at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting day and night for seven days, keeping Hashem's charge—that you may not die—for so I have been commanded.

36And Aharon and his sons did all the things that Hashem had commanded through Moshe.
