Chapter 14

1Once Shimshon went down to Timnah; and while in Timnah, he noticed a girl among the Philistine women.

va-YAY-red shim-SHON tim-NA-tah va-YAR i-SHAH b'-tim-NA-tah mi-b'-NOT p'-lish-TEEM

אוַיֵּרֶד שִׁמְשׁוֹן תִּמְנָתָה וַיַּרְא אִשָּׁה בְּתִמְנָתָה מִבְּנוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים׃

2On his return, he told his father and mother, “I noticed one of the Philistine women in Timnah; please get her for me as a wife.”

va-YA-al va-ya-GAYD l'-a-VEEV ul-i-MO va-YO-mer i-SHAH ra-EE-tee v'-tim-NA-tah mi-b'-NOT p'-lish-TEEM v'-a-TAH k'-khu o-TAH LEE l'-i-SHAH

בוַיַּעַל וַיַּגֵּד לְאָבִיו וּלְאִמּוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אִשָּׁה רָאִיתִי בְתִמְנָתָה מִבְּנוֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּים וְעַתָּה קְחוּ־אוֹתָהּ לִּי לְאִשָּׁה׃

3His father and mother said to him, “Is there no one among the daughters of your own kinsmen and among all our people, that you must go and take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” But Shimshon answered his father, “Get me that one, for she is the one that pleases me.”

va-YO-mer LO a-VEEV v'-i-MO ha-AYN biv-NOT a-KHE-kha uv-khol a-MEE i-SHAH kee a-TAH ho-LAYKH la-KA-khat i-SHAH mi-p'-lish-TEEM ha-a-ray-LEEM v-YO-mer shim-SHON el a-VEEV o-TAH kakh LEE kee HEE yash-RAH v'-ay-NAI

גוַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ הַאֵין בִּבְנוֹת אַחֶיךָ וּבְכָל־עַמִּי אִשָּׁה כִּי־אַתָּה הוֹלֵךְ לָקַחַת אִשָּׁה מִפְּלִשְׁתִּים הָעֲרֵלִים וַיֹּאמֶר שִׁמְשׁוֹן אֶל־אָבִיו אוֹתָהּ קַח־לִי כִּי־הִיא יָשְׁרָה בְעֵינָי׃

4His father and mother did not realize that this was Hashem's doing: He was seeking a pretext against the Philistines, for the Philistines were ruling over Yisrael at that time.

v'-a-VEEV v'-i-MO LO ya-d'-U KEE may-a-do-NAI HEE kee to-a-NAH hu m'-va-KAYSH mi-p'-lish-TEEM u-va-AYT ha-HEE p'-lish-TEEM mo-sh'-LEEM b'-yis-ra-AYL

דוְאָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ לֹא יָדְעוּ כִּי מֵיְהֹוָה הִיא כִּי־תֹאֲנָה הוּא־מְבַקֵּשׁ מִפְּלִשְׁתִּים וּבָעֵת הַהִיא פְּלִשְׁתִּים מֹשְׁלִים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃

5So Shimshon and his father and mother went down to Timnah.When he came to the vineyards of Timnah [for the first time], a full-grown lion came roaring at him.

va-YAY-red shim-SHON v'-a-VEEV v'-i-MO tim-NA-tah va-ya-VO-u ad kar-MAY tim-na-TAH v'-hi-NAY k'-FEER a-ra-YOT sho-AYG lik-ra-TO

הוַיֵּרֶד שִׁמְשׁוֹן וְאָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ תִּמְנָתָה וַיָּבֹאוּ עַד־כַּרְמֵי תִמְנָתָה וְהִנֵּה כְּפִיר אֲרָיוֹת שֹׁאֵג לִקְרָאתוֹ׃

6The spirit of Hashem gripped him, and he tore him asunder with his bare hands as one might tear a kid asunder; but he did not tell his father and mother what he had done.

va-titz-LAKH a-LAV RU-akh a-do-NAI vai-sha-s'-AY-hu k'-sha-SA ha-g'-DEE um-U-mah AYN b'-ya-DO v'-LO hi-GEED l'-a-VEEV ul-i-MO AYT a-SHER a-SAH

ווַתִּצְלַח עָלָיו רוּחַ יְהֹוָה וַיְשַׁסְּעֵהוּ כְּשַׁסַּע הַגְּדִי וּמְאוּמָה אֵין בְּיָדוֹ וְלֹא הִגִּיד לְאָבִיו וּלְאִמּוֹ אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה׃

7Then he went down and spoke to the woman, and she pleased Shimshon.

va-YAY-red vai-da-BAYR la-i-SHAH va-tee-SHAR b'-ay-NAY shim-SHON

זוַיֵּרֶד וַיְדַבֵּר לָאִשָּׁה וַתִּישַׁר בְּעֵינֵי שִׁמְשׁוֹן׃

8Returning the following year to marry her, he turned aside to look at the remains of the lion; and in the lion's skeleton he found a swarm of bees, and honey.

va-YA-shov mi-ya-MEEM l'-kakh-TAH va-YA-sar lir-OT AYT ma-PE-let ha-ar-YAY v'-hi-NAY a-DAT d'-vo-REEM big-vi-YAT ha-ar-YAY ud-VASH

חוַיָּשָׁב מִיָּמִים לְקַחְתָּהּ וַיָּסַר לִרְאוֹת אֵת מַפֶּלֶת הָאַרְיֵה וְהִנֵּה עֲדַת דְּבוֹרִים בִּגְוִיַּת הָאַרְיֵה וּדְבָשׁ׃

9He scooped it into his palms and ate it as he went along. When he rejoined his father and mother, he gave them some and they ate it; but he did not tell them that he had scooped the honey out of a lion's skeleton.

va-yir-DAY-hu el ka-PAV va-YAY-lekh ha-LOKH v'-a-KHOL va-YAY-lekh el a-VEEV v-el i-MO va-yi-TAYN la-HEM va-yo-KHAY-lu v'-lo hi-GEED la-HEM KEE mi-g'-vi-YAT ha-ar-YAY ra-DAH ha-d'-VASH

טוַיִּרְדֵּהוּ אֶל־כַּפָּיו וַיֵּלֶךְ הָלוֹךְ וְאָכֹל וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל־אָבִיו וְאֶל־אִמּוֹ וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם וַיֹּאכֵלוּ וְלֹא־הִגִּיד לָהֶם כִּי מִגְּוִיַּת הָאַרְיֵה רָדָה הַדְּבָשׁ׃

10So his father came down to the woman, and Shimshon made a feast there, as young men used to do.

va-YAY-red a-VEE-hu el ha-i-SHAH va-YA-as SHAM shim-SHON mish-TEH KEE KAYN ya-a-SU ha-ba-khu-REEM

יוַיֵּרֶד אָבִיהוּ אֶל־הָאִשָּׁה וַיַּעַשׂ שָׁם שִׁמְשׁוֹן מִשְׁתֶּה כִּי כֵּן יַעֲשׂוּ הַבַּחוּרִים׃

11When they saw him, they designated thirty companions to be with him.

vai-HEE kir-o-TEM o-TO va-yik-KHU sh'-lo-SHEEM may-ray-EEM va-yih-YU i-TO

יאוַיְהִי כִּרְאוֹתָם אוֹתוֹ וַיִּקְחוּ שְׁלֹשִׁים מֵרֵעִים וַיִּהְיוּ אִתּוֹ׃

12Then Shimshon said to them, “Let me propound a riddle to you. If you can give me the right answer during the seven days of the feast, I shall give you thirty linen tunics and thirty sets of clothing;

va-YO-mer la-HEM shim-SHON a-khu-dah NA la-KHEM khee-DAH im ha-GAYD ta-GEE-du LEE shiv-AT y'-MAY ha-mish-TEH um-tza-TEM v'-na-ta-TEE la-KHEM sh'-lo-SHEEM s'-dee-NEEM ush-lo-SHEEM kha-li-FOT b'-ga-DEEM

יבוַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם שִׁמְשׁוֹן אָחוּדָה־נָּא לָכֶם חִידָה אִם־הַגֵּד תַּגִּידוּ אוֹתָהּ לִי שִׁבְעַת יְמֵי הַמִּשְׁתֶּה וּמְצָאתֶם וְנָתַתִּי לָכֶם שְׁלֹשִׁים סְדִינִים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים חֲלִפֹת בְּגָדִים׃

13but if you are not able to tell it to me, you must give me thirty linen tunics and thirty sets of clothing.” And they said to him, “Ask your riddle and we will listen.”

v'-im LO tu-kh'-LU l'-ha-GEED LEE un-ta-TEM a-TEM LEE sh'-lo-SHEEM s'-dee-NEEM ush-lo-SHEEM kha-lee-FOT b'-ga-DEEM va-YO-m'-ru LO KHU-dah khee-da-t'-KHA v'-nish-ma-E-nah

יגוְאִם־לֹא תוּכְלוּ לְהַגִּיד לִי וּנְתַתֶּם אַתֶּם לִי שְׁלֹשִׁים סְדִינִים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים חֲלִיפוֹת בְּגָדִים וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ חוּדָה חִידָתְךָ וְנִשְׁמָעֶנָּה׃

14So he said to them: “Out of the eater came something to eat, Out of the strong came something sweet.” For three days they could not answer the riddle.

va-YO-mer la-HEM may-ha-o-KHAYL ya-TZA ma-a-KHAL u-may-AZ ya-TZA ma-TOK v'-LO ya-kh'-LU l'-ha-GEED ha-khee-DAH sh'-LO-shet ya-MEEM

ידוַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם מֵהָאֹכֵל יָצָא מַאֲכָל וּמֵעַז יָצָא מָתוֹק וְלֹא יָכְלוּ לְהַגִּיד הַחִידָה שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים׃

15On the seventh day, they said to Shimshon's wife, “Coax your husband to provide us with the answer to the riddle; else we shall put you and your father's household to the fire; have you invited us here in order to impoverish us?”

vai-HEE ba-YOM ha-sh'-vee-EE va-yo-m'-RU l'-AY-shet shim-SHON pa-TEE et i-SHAYKH v'-ya-ged LA-nu et ha-khee-DAH pen nis-ROF o-TAKH v'-et BAYT a-VEEKH ba-AYSH hal-yor-SHAY-nu k'-ra-TEM LA-nu ha-LO

טווַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי וַיֹּאמְרוּ לְאֵשֶׁת־שִׁמְשׁוֹן פַּתִּי אֶת־אִישֵׁךְ וְיַגֶּד־לָנוּ אֶת־הַחִידָה פֶּן־נִשְׂרֹף אוֹתָךְ וְאֶת־בֵּית אָבִיךְ בָּאֵשׁ הַלְיָרְשֵׁנוּ קְרָאתֶם לָנוּ הֲלֹא׃

16Then Shimshon's wife harassed him with tears, and she said, “You really hate me, you don't love me. You asked my countrymen a riddle, and you didn't tell me the answer.” He replied, “I haven't even told my father and mother; shall I tell you?”

va-TAYVK AY-shet shim-SHON a-LAV va-TO-mer rak s'-nay-TA-nee v'-LO a-hav-TA-nee ha-khee-DAH KHAD-ta liv-NAY a-MEE v'-LEE LO hi-GAD-tah va-YO-mer LAH hi-NAY l'-a-VEE ul-i-MEE LO hi-GAD-tee v'-LAKH a-GEED

טזוַתֵּבְךְּ אֵשֶׁת שִׁמְשׁוֹן עָלָיו וַתֹּאמֶר רַק־שְׂנֵאתַנִי וְלֹא אֲהַבְתָּנִי הַחִידָה חַדְתָּ לִבְנֵי עַמִּי וְלִי לֹא הִגַּדְתָּה וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ הִנֵּה לְאָבִי וּלְאִמִּי לֹא הִגַּדְתִּי וְלָךְ אַגִּיד׃

17During the rest of the seven days of the feast she continued to harass him with her tears, and on the seventh day he told her, because she nagged him so. And she explained the riddle to her countrymen.

va-TAYVK a-LAV shiv-AT ha-ya-MEEM a-sher ha-YAH la-HEM ha-mish-TEH vai-HEE ba-YOM ha-sh'-vee-EE va-ya-ged LAH KEE he-tzee-KAT-hu va-ta-GAYD ha-khee-DAH liv-NAY a-MAH

יזוַתֵּבְךְּ עָלָיו שִׁבְעַת הַיָּמִים אֲשֶׁר־הָיָה לָהֶם הַמִּשְׁתֶּה וַיְהִי בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי וַיַּגֶּד־לָהּ כִּי הֱצִיקַתְהוּ וַתַּגֵּד הַחִידָה לִבְנֵי עַמָּהּ׃

18On the seventh day, before the sunset, the townsmen said to him: “What is sweeter than honey, And what is stronger than a lion?” He responded: “Had you not plowed with my heifer, You would not have guessed my riddle!”

va-YO'-m'-ru LO an-SHAY ha-EER ba-YOM ha-sh'-vee-EE b'-TE-rem ya-VO ha-KHAR-sah mah ma-TOK mid-VASH u-MEH AZ may-a-REE va-YO-mer la-HEM lu-LAY kha-rash-TEM b'-eg-la-TEE LO m'-tza-TEM khee-da-TEE

יחוַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ אַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי בְּטֶרֶם יָבֹא הַחַרְסָה מַה־מָּתוֹק מִדְּבַשׁ וּמֶה עַז מֵאֲרִי וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם לוּלֵא חֲרַשְׁתֶּם בְּעֶגְלָתִי לֹא מְצָאתֶם חִידָתִי׃

19The spirit of Hashem gripped him. He went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of its men. He stripped them and gave the sets of clothing to those who had answered the riddle. And he left in a rage for his father's house.

va-titz-LAKH a-LAV RU-akh a-do-NAI va-YAY-red ash-k'-LON va-YAKH may-HEM sh'-lo-SHEEM EESH va-yi-KAKH et kha-LEE-tzo-TAM va-yi-TAYN ha-kha-lee-FOT l'-ma-gee-DAY ha-khee-DAH va-yi-KHAR a-PO va-YA-al BAYT a-VEE-hu

יטוַתִּצְלַח עָלָיו רוּחַ יְהֹוָה וַיֵּרֶד אַשְׁקְלוֹן וַיַּךְ מֵהֶם שְׁלֹשִׁים אִישׁ וַיִּקַּח אֶת־חֲלִיצוֹתָם וַיִּתֵּן הַחֲלִיפוֹת לְמַגִּידֵי הַחִידָה וַיִּחַר אַפּוֹ וַיַּעַל בֵּית אָבִיהוּ׃

20Shimshon's wife then married one of those who had been his wedding companions.

va-t'-HEE AY-shet shim-SHON l'-may-ray-AY-hu a-SHER ray-AH LO

כוַתְּהִי אֵשֶׁת שִׁמְשׁוֹן לְמֵרֵעֵהוּ אֲשֶׁר רֵעָה לוֹ׃
