Chapter 10

1After Avimelech, Tola son of Puah son of Dodo, a man of Yissachar, arose to deliver Yisrael. He lived at Shamir in the hill country of Efraim.

va-YA-kom a-kha-RAY a-vee-ME-lekh l'-ho-SHEE-a et yis-ra-AYL to-LA ben pu-AH ben do-DO EESH yi-sa-KHAR v'-hu yo-SHAYV b'-sha-MEER b'-HAR ef-RA-yim

אוַיָּקָם אַחֲרֵי אֲבִימֶלֶךְ לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל תּוֹלָע בֶּן־פּוּאָה בֶּן־דּוֹדוֹ אִישׁ יִשָּׂשכָר וְהוּא־יֹשֵׁב בְּשָׁמִיר בְּהַר אֶפְרָיִם׃

2He led Yisrael for twenty-three years; then he died and was buried at Shamir.

va-yish-POT et yis-ra-AYL es-REEM v'-sha-LOSH sha-NAH va-YA-mot va-yi-ka-VAYR b'-sha-MEER

בוַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עֶשְׂרִים וְשָׁלֹשׁ שָׁנָה וַיָּמָת וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּשָׁמִיר׃

3After him arose Yair the Giladite, and he led Yisrael for twenty-two years.

va-ya-KOM a-kha-RAV ya-EER ha-gil-a-DEE va-yish-POT et yis-ra-AYL es-REEM ush-TA-yim sha-NAH

גוַיָּקָם אַחֲרָיו יָאִיר הַגִּלְעָדִי וַיִּשְׁפֹּט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁתַּיִם שָׁנָה׃

4(He had thirty sons, who rode on thirty burros and owned thirty boroughs in the region of Gilad; these are called Havvoth-jair to this day.)

vai-hee LO sh'-lo-SHEEM ba-NEEM ro-kh'-VEEM al sh'-lo-SHEEM a-ya-REEM ush-lo-SHEEM a-ya-REEM la-HEM la-HEM yik-r'-U kha-VOT ya-EER AD ha-YOM ha-ZEH a-SHER b'-E-retz ha-gil-AD

דוַיְהִי־לוֹ שְׁלֹשִׁים בָּנִים רֹכְבִים עַל־שְׁלֹשִׁים עֲיָרִים וּשְׁלֹשִׁים עֲיָרִים לָהֶם לָהֶם יִקְרְאוּ חַוּׂת יָאִיר עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר בְּאֶרֶץ הַגִּלְעָד׃

5Then Yair died and was buried at Kamon.

va-YA-mot ya-EER va-yi-ka-VAYR b'-ka-MON

הוַיָּמָת יָאִיר וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּקָמוֹן׃

6The Israelites again did what was offensive to Hashem. They served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines; they forsook Hashem and did not serve Him.

va-yo-SEE-fu b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL la-a-SOT ha-RA b'-ay-NAY a-do-NAI va-ya-av-DU et ha-b'-a-LEEM v'-et ha-ash-ta-ROT v'-et e-lo-HAY a-RAM v'-et e-lo-HAY tzee-DON v'-AYT e-lo-HAY mo-AV v'-AYT e-lo-HAY v'-NAY a-MON v'-AYT e-lo-HAY f'-lish-TEEM va-ya-az-VU et a-do-NAI v'-LO a-va-DU-hu

ווַיֹּסִפוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לַעֲשׂוֹת הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת־הַבְּעָלִים וְאֶת־הָעַשְׁתָּרוֹת וְאֶת־אֱלֹהֵי אֲרָם וְאֶת־אֱלֹהֵי צִידוֹן וְאֵת אֱלֹהֵי מוֹאָב וְאֵת אֱלֹהֵי בְנֵי־עַמּוֹן וְאֵת אֱלֹהֵי פְלִשְׁתִּים וַיַּעַזְבוּ אֶת־יְהֹוָה וְלֹא עֲבָדוּהוּ׃

7And Hashem, incensed with Yisrael, surrendered them to the Philistines and to the Ammonites.

va-yi-khar AF a-do-NAI b'-yis-ra-AYL va-yim-k'-RAYM b'-yad p'-lish-TEEM u-v'-YAD b'-NAY a-MON

זוַיִּחַר־אַף יְהֹוָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּמְכְּרֵם בְּיַד־פְּלִשְׁתִּים וּבְיַד בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן׃

8That year they battered and shattered the Israelites—for eighteen years—all the Israelites beyond the Yarden, in [what had been] the land of the Amorites in Gilad.

va-yir-a-TZU vai-ro-tz'-TZU et b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL ba-sha-NAH ha-HEE sh'-mo-NEH es-RAY sha-NAH et kol b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL b'-AY-ver ha-yar-DAYN b'-E-retz ha-e-mor-REE a-SHER ba-gil-AD

חוַיִּרְעֲצוּ וַיְרֹצְצוּ אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּשָּׁנָה הַהִיא שְׁמֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה אֶת־כָּל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן בְּאֶרֶץ הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר בַּגִּלְעָד׃

9The Ammonites also crossed the Yarden to make war on Yehuda, Binyamin, and the House of Efraim. Yisrael was in great distress.

va-ya-av-RU v'-nay a-MON et ha-yar-DAYN l'-hi-la-KHAYM gam bee-hu-DAH u-vin-ya-MEEN u-v'-VAYT ef-RA-yim va-TAY-tzer l'-yis-ra-AYL m'-OD

טוַיַּעַבְרוּ בְנֵי־עַמּוֹן אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּן לְהִלָּחֵם גַּם־בִּיהוּדָה וּבְבִנְיָמִין וּבְבֵית אֶפְרָיִם וַתֵּצֶר לְיִשְׂרָאֵל מְאֹד׃

10Then the Israelites cried out to Hashem, “We stand guilty before You, for we have forsaken our God and served the Baalim.”

va-yiz-a-KU b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL el a-do-NAI lay-MOR kha-TA-nu LAKH v'-KHEE a-ZAV-nu et e-lo-HAY-nu va-na-a-VOD et ha-b'-a-LEEM

יוַיִּזְעֲקוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהֹוָה לֵאמֹר חָטָאנוּ לָךְ וְכִי עָזַבְנוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵינוּ וַנַּעֲבֹד אֶת־הַבְּעָלִים׃

11But Hashem said to the Israelites, “[I have rescued you] from the Egyptians, from the Amorites, from the Ammonites, and from the Philistines.

va-YO-mer a-do-NAI el b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL ha-LO mi-mitz-RA-yim u-min ha-e-mor-REE u-min b'-NAY a-MON u-min p'-lish-TEEM

יאוַיֹּאמֶר יְהֹוָה אֶל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֲלֹא מִמִּצְרַיִם וּמִן־הָאֱמֹרִי וּמִן־בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וּמִן־פְּלִשְׁתִּים׃

12The Sidonians, Amalek, and Maon also oppressed you; and when you cried out to Me, I saved you from them.

v'-tzee-do-NEEM va-a-ma-LAYK u-ma-ON la-kha-TZU et-KHEM va-titz-a-KU ay-LAI va-o-SHEE-ah et-KHEM mi-ya-DAM

יבוְצִידוֹנִים וַעֲמָלֵק וּמָעוֹן לָחֲצוּ אֶתְכֶם וַתִּצְעֲקוּ אֵלַי וָאוֹשִׁיעָה אֶתְכֶם מִיָּדָם׃

13Yet you have forsaken Me and have served other gods. No, I will not deliver you again.

v'-a-TEM a-zav-TEM o-TEE va-ta-av-DU a-lo-HEEM a-khay-REEM la-KHAYN lo o-SEEF l'-ho-SHEE-a et-KHEM

יגוְאַתֶּם עֲזַבְתֶּם אוֹתִי וַתַּעַבְדוּ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים לָכֵן לֹא־אוֹסִיף לְהוֹשִׁיעַ אֶתְכֶם׃

14Go cry to the gods you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress!”

l'-KHU v'-za-a-KU el ha-e-lo-HEEM a-SHER b'-khar-TEM BAM HAY-mah yo-SHEE-u la-KHEM b'-AYT tza-rat-KHEM

ידלְכוּ וְזַעֲקוּ אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר בְּחַרְתֶּם בָּם הֵמָּה יוֹשִׁיעוּ לָכֶם בְּעֵת צָרַתְכֶם׃

15But the Israelites implored Hashem: “We stand guilty. Do to us as You see fit; only save us this day!”

va-yo-m'-RU b'-nay yis-ra-AYL el a-do-NAI kha-TA-nu a-say a-TAH LA-nu k'-khol ha-TOV b'-ay-NE-kha AKH ha-tzee-LAY-nu NA ha-YOM ha-ZEH

טווַיֹּאמְרוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהֹוָה חָטָאנוּ עֲשֵׂה־אַתָּה לָנוּ כְּכָל־הַטּוֹב בְּעֵינֶיךָ אַךְ הַצִּילֵנוּ נָא הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃

16They removed the alien gods from among them and served Hashem; and He could not bear the miseries of Yisrael.

va-ya-SEE-ru et e-lo-HAY ha-nay-KHAR mi-kir-BAM va-ya-av-DU et a-do-NAI va-tik-TZAR naf-SHO ba-a-MAL yis-ra-AYL

טזוַיָּסִירוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵי הַנֵּכָר מִקִּרְבָּם וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת־יְהֹוָה וַתִּקְצַר נַפְשׁוֹ בַּעֲמַל יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

17The Ammonites mustered and they encamped in Gilad; and the Israelites massed and they encamped at Mitzpa.

va-yitz-a-KU b'-NAY a-MON va-ya-kha-NU ba-gil-AD va-yay-a-s'-FU b'-NAY yis-ra-AYL va-ya-kha-NU ba-mitz-PAH

יזוַיִּצָּעֲקוּ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּגִּלְעָד וַיֵּאָסְפוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּחֲנוּ בַּמִּצְפָּה׃

18The troops—the officers of Gilad—said to one another, “Let the man who is the first to fight the Ammonites be chieftain over all the inhabitants of Gilad.”

va-yo-m'-RU ha-AM sa-RAY gil-AD EESH el ray-AY-hu MEE ha-EESH a-SHER ya-KHAYL l'-hi-la-KHAYM biv-NAY a-MON yih-YEH l'-ROSH l'-KHOL yo-sh'-VAY gil-AD

יחוַיֹּאמְרוּ הָעָם שָׂרֵי גִלְעָד אִישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ מִי הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר יָחֵל לְהִלָּחֵם בִּבְנֵי עַמּוֹן יִהְיֶה לְרֹאשׁ לְכֹל יֹשְׁבֵי גִלְעָד׃
