Chapter 15

1The portion that fell by lot to the various clans of the tribe of Yehuda lay farthest south, down to the border of Edom, which is the Wilderness of Zin.

אוַיְהִי הַגּוֹרָל לְמַטֵּה בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם אֶל־גְּבוּל אֱדוֹם מִדְבַּר־צִן נֶגְבָּה מִקְצֵה תֵימָן׃

2Their southern boundary began from the tip of the Dead Sea, from the tongue that projects southward.

בוַיְהִי לָהֶם גְּבוּל נֶגֶב מִקְצֵה יָם הַמֶּלַח מִן־הַלָּשֹׁן הַפֹּנֶה נֶגְבָּה׃

3It proceeded to the south of the Ascent of Akrabbim, passed on to Zin, ascended to the south of Kadesh-barnea, passed on to Chetzron, ascended to Addar, and made a turn to Karka.

גוְיָצָא אֶל־מִנֶּגֶב לְמַעֲלֵה עַקְרַבִּים וְעָבַר צִנָה וְעָלָה מִנֶּגֶב לְקָדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַ וְעָבַר חֶצְרוֹן וְעָלָה אַדָּרָה וְנָסַב הַקַּרְקָעָה׃

4From there it passed on to Azmon and proceeded to the Wadi of Egypt; and the boundary ran on to the Sea. That shall be your southern boundary.

דוְעָבַר עַצְמוֹנָה וְיָצָא נַחַל מִצְרַיִם והיה [וְהָיוּ] תֹּצְאוֹת הַגְּבוּל יָמָּה זֶה־יִהְיֶה לָכֶם גְּבוּל נֶגֶב׃

5The boundary on the east was the Dead Sea up to the mouth of the Yarden. On the northern side, the boundary began at the tongue of the Sea at the mouth of the Yarden.

הוּגְבוּל קֵדְמָה יָם הַמֶּלַח עַד־קְצֵה הַיַּרְדֵּן וּגְבוּל לִפְאַת צָפוֹנָה מִלְּשׁוֹן הַיָּם מִקְצֵה הַיַּרְדֵּן׃

6The boundary ascended to Beth-hoglah and passed north of Beth-arabah; then the boundary ascended to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuven.

ווְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל בֵּית חָגְלָה וְעָבַר מִצְּפוֹן לְבֵית הָעֲרָבָה וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל אֶבֶן בֹּהַן בֶּן־רְאוּבֵן׃

7The boundary ascended from the Valley of Achor to Debir and turned north to Gilgal, facing the Ascent of Adummim which is south of the wadi; from there the boundary continued to the waters of En-shemesh and ran on to En-rogel.

זוְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל דְּבִרָה מֵעֵמֶק עָכוֹר וְצָפוֹנָה פֹּנֶה אֶל־הַגִּלְגָּל אֲשֶׁר־נֹכַח לְמַעֲלֵה אֲדֻמִּים אֲשֶׁר מִנֶּגֶב לַנָּחַל וְעָבַר הַגְּבוּל אֶל־מֵי־עֵין שֶׁמֶשׁ וְהָיוּ תֹצְאֹתָיו אֶל־עֵין רֹגֵל׃

8Then the boundary ascended into the Valley of Ben-hinnom, along the southern flank of the Jebusites—that is, Yerushalayim. The boundary then ran up to the top of the hill which flanks the Valley of Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.

חוְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל גֵּי בֶן־הִנֹּם אֶל־כֶּתֶף הַיְבוּסִי מִנֶּגֶב הִיא יְרוּשָׁלִָם וְעָלָה הַגְּבוּל אֶל־רֹאשׁ הָהָר אֲשֶׁר עַל־פְּנֵי גֵי־הִנֹּם יָמָּה אֲשֶׁר בִּקְצֵה עֵמֶק־רְפָאִים צָפֹנָה׃

9From that hilltop the boundary curved to the fountain of the Waters of Nephtoah and ran on to the towns of Mount Ephron; then the boundary curved to Baalah—that is, Kiryat Ye'arim.

טוְתָאַר הַגְּבוּל מֵרֹאשׁ הָהָר אֶל־מַעְיַן מֵי נֶפְתּוֹחַ וְיָצָא אֶל־עָרֵי הַר־עֶפְרוֹן וְתָאַר הַגְּבוּל בַּעֲלָה הִיא קִרְיַת יְעָרִים׃

10From Baalah the boundary turned westward to Mount Seir, passed north of the slope of Mount Jearim—that is, Chesalon—descended to Beit Shemesh, and passed on to Timnah.

יוְנָסַב הַגְּבוּל מִבַּעֲלָה יָמָּה אֶל־הַר שֵׂעִיר וְעָבַר אֶל־כֶּתֶף הַר־יְעָרִים מִצָּפוֹנָה הִיא כְסָלוֹן וְיָרַד בֵּית־שֶׁמֶשׁ וְעָבַר תִּמְנָה׃

11The boundary then proceeded to the northern flank of Ekron; the boundary curved to Shikkeron, passed on to Mount Baalah, and proceeded to Jabneel; and the boundary ran on to the Sea.

יאוְיָצָא הַגְּבוּל אֶל־כֶּתֶף עֶקְרוֹן צָפוֹנָה וְתָאַר הַגְּבוּל שִׁכְּרוֹנָה וְעָבַר הַר־הַבַּעֲלָה וְיָצָא יַבְנְאֵל וְהָיוּ תֹּצְאוֹת הַגְּבוּל יָמָּה׃

12And the western boundary was the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. Those were the boundaries of the various clans of the Judites on all sides.

יבוּגְבוּל יָם הַיָּמָּה הַגָּדוֹל וּגְבוּל זֶה גְּבוּל בְּנֵי־יְהוּדָה סָבִיב לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם׃

13In accordance with Hashem's command to Yehoshua, Kalev son of Jephunneh was given a portion among the Judites, namely, Kiryat Arba—that is, Chevron. ([Arba] was the father of Anak.)

ul-kha-LAYV ben y'-fu-NEH na-TAN KHAY-lek b'-TOKH b'-nay y'-hu-DAH el PEE a-do-NAI lee-ho-SHU-a et kir-YAT ar-BA a-VEE ha-a-NAK HEE khev-RON

יגוּלְכָלֵב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּה נָתַן חֵלֶק בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי־יְהוּדָה אֶל־פִּי יְהֹוָה לִיהוֹשֻׁעַ אֶת־קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע אֲבִי הָעֲנָק הִיא חֶבְרוֹן׃

14Kalev dislodged from there the three Anakites: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak.

ידוַיֹּרֶשׁ מִשָּׁם כָּלֵב אֶת־שְׁלוֹשָׁה בְּנֵי הָעֲנָק אֶת־שֵׁשַׁי וְאֶת־אֲחִימַן וְאֶת־תַּלְמַי יְלִידֵי הָעֲנָק׃

15From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir—the name of Debir was formerly Kiryat Sefer

טווַיַּעַל מִשָּׁם אֶל־יֹשְׁבֵי דְּבִר וְשֵׁם־דְּבִר לְפָנִים קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר׃

16and Kalev announced, “I will give my daughter Achsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiryat Sefer.”

טזוַיֹּאמֶר כָּלֵב אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּה אֶת־קִרְיַת־סֵפֶר וּלְכָדָהּ וְנָתַתִּי לוֹ אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתִּי לְאִשָּׁה׃

17His kinsman Otniel the Kenizzite captured it; and Kalev gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage.

יזוַיִּלְכְּדָהּ עָתְנִיאֵל בֶּן־קְנַז אֲחִי כָלֵב וַיִּתֶּן־לוֹ אֶת־עַכְסָה בִתּוֹ לְאִשָּׁה׃

18When she came [to him], she induced him to ask her father for some property. She dismounted from her donkey, and Kalev asked her, “What is the matter?”

יחוַיְהִי בְּבוֹאָהּ וַתְּסִיתֵהוּ לִשְׁאוֹל מֵאֵת־אָבִיהָ שָׂדֶה וַתִּצְנַח מֵעַל הַחֲמוֹר וַיֹּאמֶר־לָהּ כָּלֵב מַה־לָּךְ׃

19She replied, “Give me a present; for you have given me away as Negev-land; so give me springs of water.” And he gave her Upper and Lower Gulloth.

יטוַתֹּאמֶר תְּנָה־לִּי בְרָכָה כִּי אֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב נְתַתָּנִי וְנָתַתָּה לִי גֻּלֹּת מָיִם וַיִּתֶּן־לָהּ אֵת גֻּלֹּת עִלִּיּוֹת וְאֵת גֻּלֹּת תַּחְתִּיּוֹת׃

20This was the portion of the tribe of the Judites by their clans:

כזֹאת נַחֲלַת מַטֵּה בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָם׃

21The towns at the far end of the tribe of Yehuda, near the border of Edom, in the Negev, were: Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur,

כאוַיִּהְיוּ הֶעָרִים מִקְצֵה לְמַטֵּה בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה אֶל־גְּבוּל אֱדוֹם בַּנֶּגְבָּה קַבְצְאֵל וְעֵדֶר וְיָגוּר׃

22Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah,

כבוְקִינָה וְדִימוֹנָה וְעַדְעָדָה׃

23Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan,

כגוְקֶדֶשׁ וְחָצוֹר וְיִתְנָן׃

24Ziph, Telem, Bealoth,

כדזִיף וָטֶלֶם וּבְעָלוֹת׃

25Hazor-hadattah, Kerioth-hezron—that is, Hazor

כהוְחָצוֹר חֲדַתָּה וּקְרִיּוֹת חֶצְרוֹן הִיא חָצוֹר׃

26Amam, Shema, Moladah,

כואֲמָם וּשְׁמַע וּמוֹלָדָה׃

27Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-pelet,

כזוַחֲצַר גַּדָּה וְחֶשְׁמוֹן וּבֵית פָּלֶט׃

28Hazar-shual, Be'er Sheva, Biziothiah,

כחוַחֲצַר שׁוּעָל וּבְאֵר שֶׁבַע וּבִזְיוֹתְיָה׃

29Baalah, Iim, Ezem,

כטבַּעֲלָה וְעִיִּים וָעָצֶם׃

30Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah,

לוְאֶלְתּוֹלַד וּכְסִיל וְחָרְמָה׃

31Tziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah,

לאוְצִקְלַג וּמַדְמַנָּה וְסַנְסַנָּה׃

32Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain and Rimmon. Total: 29 towns, with their villages.

לבוּלְבָאוֹת וְשִׁלְחִים וְעַיִן וְרִמּוֹן כָּל־עָרִים עֶשְׂרִים וָתֵשַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

33In the Lowland: Eshtaol, Tzora, Ashnah,

לגבַּשְּׁפֵלָה אֶשְׁתָּאוֹל וְצָרְעָה וְאַשְׁנָה׃

34Zanoach, En-gannim, Tapuach, Enam,

לדוְזָנוֹחַ וְעֵין גַּנִּים תַּפּוּחַ וְהָעֵינָם׃

35Yarmut, Adulam, Socoh, Azeika,

להיַרְמוּת וַעֲדֻלָּם שׂוֹכֹה וַעֲזֵקָה׃

36Shaarayim, Adithaim, Gedera, and Gederothaim—14 towns, with their villages.

לווְשַׁעֲרַיִם וַעֲדִיתַיִם וְהַגְּדֵרָה וּגְדֵרֹתָיִם עָרִים אַרְבַּע־עֶשְׂרֵה וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

37Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal-gad,

לזצְנָן וַחֲדָשָׁה וּמִגְדַּל־גָּד׃

38Dilan, Mizpeh, Joktheel,

לחוְדִלְעָן וְהַמִּצְפֶּה וְיָקְתְאֵל׃

39Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon,

לטלָכִישׁ וּבָצְקַת וְעֶגְלוֹן׃

40Cabbon, Lahmas, Chithlish,

מוְכַבּוֹן וְלַחְמָס וְכִתְלִישׁ׃

41Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah: 16 towns, with their villages.

מאוּגְדֵרוֹת בֵּית־דָּגוֹן וְנַעֲמָה וּמַקֵּדָה עָרִים שֵׁשׁ־עֶשְׂרֵה וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

42Libnah, Ether, Ashan,

מבלִבְנָה וָעֶתֶר וְעָשָׁן׃

43Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib,

מגוְיִפְתָּח וְאַשְׁנָה וּנְצִיב׃

44Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah: 9 towns, with their villages.

מדוּקְעִילָה וְאַכְזִיב וּמָרֵאשָׁה עָרִים תֵּשַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

45Ekron, with its dependencies and villages.

מהעֶקְרוֹן וּבְנֹתֶיהָ וַחֲצֵרֶיהָ׃

46From Ekron westward, all the towns in the vicinity of Ashdod, with their villages

מומֵעֶקְרוֹן וָיָמָּה כֹּל אֲשֶׁר־עַל־יַד אַשְׁדּוֹד וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

47Ashdod, its dependencies and its villages—Azza, its dependencies and its villages, all the way to the Wadi of Egypt and the edge of the Mediterranean Sea.

מזאַשְׁדּוֹד בְּנוֹתֶיהָ וַחֲצֵרֶיהָ עַזָּה בְּנוֹתֶיהָ וַחֲצֵרֶיהָ עַד־נַחַל מִצְרָיִם וְהַיָּם הגבול [הַגָּדוֹל] וּגְבוּל׃

48And in the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh,

מחוּבָהָר שָׁמִיר וְיַתִּיר וְשׂוֹכֹה׃

49Dannah, Kiriath-sannah—that is, Debir

מטוְדַנָּה וְקִרְיַת־סַנָּה הִיא דְבִר׃

50Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim,

נוַעֲנָב וְאֶשְׁתְּמֹה וְעָנִים׃

51Goshen, Holon, and Giloh: 11 towns, with their villages.

נאוְגֹשֶׁן וְחֹלֹן וְגִלֹה עָרִים אַחַת־עֶשְׂרֵה וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

52Arab, Dumah, Eshan,

נבאֲרַב וְרוּמָה וְאֶשְׁעָן׃

53Janum, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,

נגוינים [וְיָנוּם] וּבֵית־תַּפּוּחַ וַאֲפֵקָה׃

54Humtah, Kiryat Arba—that is, Chevron—and Zior: 9 towns, with their villages.

נדוְחֻמְטָה וְקִרְיַת אַרְבַּע הִיא חֶבְרוֹן וְצִיעֹר עָרִים תֵּשַׁע וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

55Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah,

נהמָעוֹן כַּרְמֶל וָזִיף וְיוּטָּה׃

56Yizrael, Jokdeam, Zanoach,

נווְיִזְרְעֶאל וְיָקְדְעָם וְזָנוֹחַ׃

57Kain, Giva, and Timnah: 10 towns, with their villages.

נזהַקַּיִן גִּבְעָה וְתִמְנָה עָרִים עֶשֶׂר וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

58Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor,

נחחַלְחוּל בֵּית־צוּר וּגְדוֹר׃

59Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltekon: 6 towns, with their villages.

נטוּמַעֲרָת וּבֵית־עֲנוֹת וְאֶלְתְּקֹן עָרִים שֵׁשׁ וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

60Kiriath-baal—that is, Kiryat Ye'arim—and Rabbah: 2 towns, with their villages.

סקִרְיַת־בַּעַל הִיא קִרְיַת יְעָרִים וְהָרַבָּה עָרִים שְׁתַּיִם וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

61In the wilderness: Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah,

סאבַּמִּדְבָּר בֵּית הָעֲרָבָה מִדִּין וּסְכָכָה׃

62Nibshan, Ir-melah, and Ein Gedi: 6 towns, with their villages.

סבוְהַנִּבְשָׁן וְעִיר־הַמֶּלַח וְעֵין גֶּדִי עָרִים שֵׁשׁ וְחַצְרֵיהֶן׃

63But the Judites could not dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Yerushalayim; so the Judites dwell with the Jebusites in Yerushalayim to this day.

סגוְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִי יוֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִַם לֹא־יוכלו [יָכְלוּ] בְנֵי־יְהוּדָה לְהוֹרִישָׁם וַיֵּשֶׁב הַיְבוּסִי אֶת־בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה בִּירוּשָׁלִַם עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה׃
