Joel - Chapter 4

1For lo! in those days 1 And in that time, When I restore the fortunes Of Yehuda and Yerushalayim,

אכִּי הִנֵּה בַּיָּמִים הָהֵמָּה וּבָעֵת הַהִיא אֲשֶׁר אשוב [אָשִׁיב] אֶת־שְׁבוּת יְהוּדָה וִירוּשָׁלָ ִם׃

2I will gather all the nations And bring them down to the Valley of Yehoshafat. There I will contend with them Over My very own people, Yisrael, Which they scattered among the nations. For they divided My land among themselves

בוְקִבַּצְתִּי אֶת־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם וְהוֹרַדְתִּים אֶל־עֵמֶק יְהוֹשָׁפָט וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּי עִמָּם שָׁם עַל־עַמִּי וְנַחֲלָתִי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲשֶׁר פִּזְּרוּ בַגּוֹיִם וְאֶת־אַרְצִי חִלֵּקוּ׃

3And cast lots over My people; And they bartered a boy for a whore, And sold a girl for wine, which they drank.

גוְאֶל־עַמִּי יַדּוּ גוֹרָל וַיִּתְּנוּ הַיֶּלֶד בַּזּוֹנָה וְהַיַּלְדָּה מָכְרוּ בַיַּיִן וַיִּשְׁתּוּ׃

4What is this you are doing to Me, O Tyre, Sidon, and all the districts of Philistia? Are you requiting Me for something I have done, or are you doing something for My benefit? Quick as a flash, I will pay you back;

דוְגַם מָה־אַתֶּם לִי צֹר וְצִידוֹן וְכֹל גְּלִילוֹת פְּלָשֶׁת הַגְּמוּל אַתֶּם מְשַׁלְּמִים עָלָי וְאִם־גֹּמְלִים אַתֶּם עָלַי קַל מְהֵרָה אָשִׁיב גְּמֻלְכֶם בְּרֹאשְׁכֶם׃

5for you have taken My gold and My silver, and have carried off My precious treasures to your palaces;

האֲשֶׁר־כַּסְפִּי וּזְהָבִי לְקַחְתֶּם וּמַחֲמַדַּי הַטֹּבִים הֲבֵאתֶם לְהֵיכְלֵיכֶם׃

6and you have sold the people of Yehuda and the people of Yerushalayim to the Ionians, so that you have removed them far away from their homeland.

ווּבְנֵי יְהוּדָה וּבְנֵי יְרוּשָׁלַ ִם מְכַרְתֶּם לִבְנֵי הַיְּוָנִים לְמַעַן הַרְחִיקָם מֵעַל גְּבוּלָם׃

7Behold, I will rouse them to leave the place you have sold them to, and I will pay you back:

זהִנְנִי מְעִירָם מִן־הַמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר־מְכַרְתֶּם אֹתָם שָׁמָּה וַהֲשִׁבֹתִי גְמֻלְכֶם בְּרֹאשְׁכֶם׃

8I will deliver your sons and daughters into the hands of the people of Yehuda, and they will sell them into captivity to a distant nation—for Hashem has spoken.

חוּמָכַרְתִּי אֶת־בְּנֵיכֶם וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיכֶם בְּיַד בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה וּמְכָרוּם לִשְׁבָאיִם אֶל־גּוֹי רָחוֹק כִּי יְהֹוָה דִּבֵּר׃

9Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare for battle! Arouse the warriors, Let all the fighters come and draw near!

טקִרְאוּ־זֹאת בַּגּוֹיִם קַדְּשׁוּ מִלְחָמָה הָעִירוּ הַגִּבּוֹרִים יִגְּשׁוּ יַעֲלוּ כֹּל אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה׃

10Beat your plowshares into swords, And your pruning hooks into spears. Let even the weakling say, “I am strong.”

יכֹּתּוּ אִתֵּיכֶם לַחֲרָבוֹת וּמַזְמְרֹתֵיכֶם לִרְמָחִים הַחַלָּשׁ יֹאמַר גִּבּוֹר אָנִי׃

11Rouse yourselves and come, All you nations; Come together From roundabout. There bring down Your warriors, Hashem!

יאעוּשׁוּ וָבֹאוּ כָל־הַגּוֹיִם מִסָּבִיב וְנִקְבָּצוּ שָׁמָּה הַנְחַת יְהֹוָה גִּבּוֹרֶיךָ׃

12Let the nations rouse themselves and march up To the Valley of Yehoshafat; For there I will sit in judgment Over all the nations roundabout.

יביֵעוֹרוּ וְיַעֲלוּ הַגּוֹיִם אֶל־עֵמֶק יְהוֹשָׁפָט כִּי שָׁם אֵשֵׁב לִשְׁפֹּט אֶת־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם מִסָּבִיב׃

13Swing the sickle, For the crop is ripe; Come and tread, For the winepress is full, The vats are overflowing! For great is their wickedness.

יגשִׁלְחוּ מַגָּל כִּי בָשַׁל קָצִיר בֹּאוּ רְדוּ כִּי־מָלְאָה גַּת הֵשִׁיקוּ הַיְקָבִים כִּי רַבָּה רָעָתָם׃

14Multitudes upon multitudes In the Valley of Decision! For the day of Hashem is at hand In the Valley of Decision.

ידהֲמוֹנִים הֲמוֹנִים בְּעֵמֶק הֶחָרוּץ כִּי קָרוֹב יוֹם יְהֹוָה בְּעֵמֶק הֶחָרוּץ׃

15Sun and moon are darkened, And stars withdraw their brightness.

טושֶׁמֶשׁ וְיָרֵחַ קָדָרוּ וְכוֹכָבִים אָסְפוּ נָגְהָם׃

16And Hashem will roar from Tzion, And shout aloud from Yerushalayim, So that heaven and earth tremble. But Hashem will be a shelter to His people, A refuge to the children of Yisrael.

טזוַיהֹוָה מִצִּיּוֹן יִשְׁאָג וּמִירוּשָׁלַ ִם יִתֵּן קוֹלוֹ וְרָעֲשׁוּ שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ וַיהֹוָה מַחֲסֶה לְעַמּוֹ וּמָעוֹז לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

17And you shall know that I Hashem your God Dwell in Tzion, My holy mount. And Yerushalayim shall be holy; Nevermore shall strangers pass through it.

יזוִידַעְתֶּם כִּי אֲנִי יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם שֹׁכֵן בְּצִיּוֹן הַר־קָדְשִׁי וְהָיְתָה יְרוּשָׁלַ ִם קֹדֶשׁ וְזָרִים לֹא־יַעַבְרוּ־בָהּ עוֹד׃

18And in that day, The mountains shall drip with wine, The hills shall flow with milk, And all the watercourses of Yehuda shall flow with water; A spring shall issue from the House of Hashem And shall water the Wadi of the Acacias.

יחוְהָיָה בַיּוֹם הַהוּא יִטְּפוּ הֶהָרִים עָסִיס וְהַגְּבָעוֹת תֵּלַכְנָה חָלָב וְכָל־אֲפִיקֵי יְהוּדָה יֵלְכוּ מָיִם וּמַעְיָן מִבֵּית יְהֹוָה יֵצֵא וְהִשְׁקָה אֶת־נַחַל הַשִּׁטִּים׃

19Egypt shall be a desolation, And Edom a desolate waste, Because of the outrage to the people of Yehuda, In whose land they shed the blood of the innocent.

יטמִצְרַיִם לִשְׁמָמָה תִהְיֶה וֶאֱדוֹם לְמִדְבַּר שְׁמָמָה תִּהְיֶה מֵחֲמַס בְּנֵי יְהוּדָה אֲשֶׁר־שָׁפְכוּ דָם־נָקִיא בְּאַרְצָם׃

20But Yehuda shall be inhabited forever, And Yerushalayim throughout the ages.

vee-hu-DAH l'-o-LAM tay-SHAYV vee-ru-sha-LA-im l'-DOR va-DOR

כוִיהוּדָה לְעוֹלָם תֵּשֵׁב וִירוּשָׁלַ ִם לְדוֹר וָדוֹר׃

21Thus I will treat as innocent their blood Which I have not treated as innocent; And Hashem shall dwell in Tzion.

כאוְנִקֵּיתִי דָּמָם לֹא־נִקֵּיתִי וַיהֹוָה שֹׁכֵן בְּצִיּוֹן׃
