1When Yirmiyahu had finished speaking all these words to all the people—all the words of Hashem their God, with which Hashem their God had sent him to them—
2Azarya son of Hoshaiah and Yochanan son of Kareah and all the arrogant men said to Yirmiyahu, “You are lying! Hashem our God did not send you to say, ‘Don't go to Egypt and sojourn there'!
3It is Baruch son of Nerya who is inciting you against us, so that we will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans to be killed or to be exiled to Babylon!”
4So Yochanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and the rest of the people did not obey Hashem's command to remain in the land of Yehuda.
5Instead, Yochanan son of Kareah and all the army officers took the entire remnant of Yehuda—those who had returned from all the countries to which they had been scattered and had sojourned in the land of Yehuda,
6men, women, and children; and the daughters of the king and all the people whom Nebuzaradan the chief of the guards had left with Gedalya son of Achikam son of Shafan, as well as the Navi Yirmiyahu and Baruch son of Nerya—
7and they went to Egypt. They did not obey Hashem. They arrived at Tahpanhes,
8and the word of Hashem came to Yirmiyahu in Tahpanhes:
9Get yourself large stones, and embed them in mortar in the brick structure at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes, with some Judeans looking on.
10And say to them: “Thus said the lord of Hosts, the God of Yisrael: I am sending for My servant King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, and I will set his throne over these stones which I have embedded. He will spread out his pavilion over them.
v'-a-mar-TA a-lay-HEM koh a-MAR a-do-NAI tz'-va-OT e-lo-HAY yis-ra-AYL hi-n'-NEE sho-LAY-akh v'-la-kakh-TEE et n'-vu-khad-RE-tzar me-lekh ba-VEL av-DEE v'-sam-TEE khis-O mi-MA-al la-a-va-NEEM ha-AY-leh a-SHER ta-MAN-tee v'-na-TAH et shaf-ree-RO a-lay-HEM
43:10 And I will set his throne over these stones
Yirmiyahu is commanded to embed giant stones into the mortar in front of Pharaoh’s palace while men from Yehuda look on. This final symbolic act was performed with the hopes that the Jews who had fled to Egypt would regret their actions and return to Israel. The prophet declares that the gates of Egypt will not provide them protection, as the Babylonians will conquer Egypt as well. The only protection they can rely on is a return to Hashem’s will and the Land of Israel, or they too will be captured and destroyed. God’s dominion, while concentrated in the Holy Land, extends everywhere; they cannot flee from His bidding.
11He will come and attack the land of Egypt, delivering Those destined for the plague, to the plague, Those destined for captivity, to captivity, And those destined for the sword, to the sword.
12And I will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt; he will burn them down and carry them off. He shall wrap himself up in the land of Egypt, as a shepherd wraps himself up in his garment. And he shall depart from there in safety.
13He shall smash the obelisks of the Temple of the Sun which is in the land of Egypt, and he shall burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.
