Chapter 26

Translation and Transliteration of

1At the beginning of the reign of King Yehoyakim son of Yoshiyahu of Yehuda, this word came from Hashem:

2“Thus said Hashem: Stand in the court of the House of Hashem, and speak to [the men of] all the towns of Yehuda, who are coming to worship in the House of Hashem, all the words which I command you to speak to them. Do not omit anything.

3Perhaps they will listen and turn back, each from his evil way, that I may renounce the punishment I am planning to bring upon them for their wicked acts.

4“Say to them: Thus said Hashem: If you do not obey Me, abiding by the Teaching that I have set before you,

5heeding the words of My servants the Neviim whom I have been sending to you persistently—but you have not heeded—

6then I will make this House like Shilo, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of earth.”

7The Kohanim and Neviim and all the people heard Yirmiyahu speaking these words in the House of Hashem.

8And when Yirmiyahu finished speaking all that Hashem had commanded him to speak to all the people, the Kohanim and the Neviim and all the people seized him, shouting, “You shall die!

9How dare you prophesy in the name of Hashem that this House shall become like Shilo and this city be made desolate, without inhabitants?” And all the people crowded about Yirmiyahu in the House of Hashem.

10When the officials of Yehuda heard about this, they went up from the king's palace to the House of Hashem and held a session at the entrance of the New Gate of the House of Hashem.

11The Kohanim and Neviim said to the officials and to all the people, “This man deserves the death penalty, for he has prophesied against this city, as you yourselves have heard.”

12Yirmiyahu said to the officials and to all the people, “It was Hashem who sent me to prophesy against this House and this city all the words you heard.

13Therefore mend your ways and your acts, and heed Hashem your God, that Hashem may renounce the punishment He has decreed for you.

14As for me, I am in your hands: do to me what seems good and right to you.

15But know that if you put me to death, you and this city and its inhabitants will be guilty of shedding the blood of an innocent man. For in truth Hashem has sent me to you, to speak all these words to you.”

16Then the officials and all the people said to the Kohanim and Neviim, “This man does not deserve the death penalty, for he spoke to us in the name of Hashem our God.”

17And some of the elders of the land arose and said to the entire assemblage of the people,

18Micha the Morashtite, who prophesied in the days of King Chizkiyahu of Yehuda, said to all the people of Yehuda: ‘Thus said the lord of Hosts: Tzion shall be plowed as a field, Yerushalayim shall become heaps of ruins And the Har Habayit a shrine in the woods.'

19“Did King Chizkiyahu of Yehuda, and all Yehuda, put him to death? Did he not rather fear Hashem and implore Hashem, so that Hashem renounced the punishment He had decreed against them? We are about to do great injury to ourselves!”

26:19   Did King Chizkiyahu of Yehuda, and all Yehuda, put him to death?

Yirmiyahu is arrested by the officers and placed on trial as a false prophet. They claim that Yirmiyahu’s prophecies of destruction and exile contradict the eternal bond between Hashem and His people. However, the elders of Israel come to Yirmiyahu’s defense. A century earlier, at the time of the Assyrian invasion, the prophet Micha had also spoken against the city. Rather than feeling threatened, the righteous king Chizkiyahu had led the people in repentance, and God saved the people. Yirmiyahu is hoping that the people of his generation will have a similar response to his prophecies, that they will return to Hashem and be spared. The message is true for all time, as it says in Yechezkel 33:11: “As I live—declares Hashem—it is not My desire that the wicked shall die, but that the wicked [one] turn from his [evil] ways and live.”

20There was also a man prophesying in the name of Hashem, Uriya son of Shemaya from Kiryat Ye'arim, who prophesied against this city and this land the same things as Yirmiyahu.

21King Yehoyakim and all his warriors and all the officials heard about his address, and the king wanted to put him to death. Uriya heard of this and fled in fear, and came to Egypt.

22But King Yehoyakim sent men to Egypt, Elnathan son of Achbor and men with him to Egypt.

23They took Uriya out of Egypt and brought him to King Yehoyakim, who had him put to the sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.

24However, Achikam son of Shafan protected Yirmiyahu, so that he was not handed over to the people for execution.
