Chapter 52

Translation and Transliteration of 

1Awake, awake, O Tzion! Clothe yourself in splendor; Put on your robes of majesty, Yerushalayim, holy city! For the uncircumcised and the unclean Shall never enter you again.

אעוּרִי עוּרִי לִבְשִׁי עֻזֵּךְ צִיּוֹן לִבְשִׁי בִּגְדֵי תִפְאַרְתֵּךְ יְרוּשָׁלַ ִם עִיר הַקֹּדֶשׁ כִּי לֹא יוֹסִיף יָבֹא־בָךְ עוֹד עָרֵל וְטָמֵא׃

2Arise, shake off the dust, Sit [on your throne], Yerushalayim! Loose the bonds from your neck, O captive one, Fair Tzion!

בהִתְנַעֲרִי מֵעָפָר קוּמִי שְּׁבִי יְרוּשָׁלָ ִם התפתחו [הִתְפַּתְּחִי] מוֹסְרֵי צַוָּארֵךְ שְׁבִיָּה בַּת־צִיּוֹן׃

3For thus said Hashem: You were sold for no price, And shall be redeemed without money.

גכִּי־כֹה אָמַר יְהֹוָה חִנָּם נִמְכַּרְתֶּם וְלֹא בְכֶסֶף תִּגָּאֵלוּ׃

4For thus said Hashem: Of old, My people went down To Egypt to sojourn there; But Assyria has robbed them, Giving nothing in return.

דכִּי כֹה אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה מִצְרַיִם יָרַד־עַמִּי בָרִאשֹׁנָה לָגוּר שָׁם וְאַשּׁוּר בְּאֶפֶס עֲשָׁקוֹ׃

5What therefore do I gain here? —declares Hashem— For My people has been carried off for nothing, Their mockers howl —declares Hashem— And constantly, unceasingly, My name is reviled.

הוְעַתָּה מי־לי־[מַה־] [לִּי־] פֹה נְאֻם־יְהֹוָה כִּי־לֻקַּח עַמִּי חִנָּם משלו [מֹשְׁלָיו] יְהֵילִילוּ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָה וְתָמִיד כָּל־הַיּוֹם שְׁמִי מִנֹּאָץ׃

6Assuredly, My people shall learn My name, Assuredly [they shall learn] on that day That I, the One who promised, Am now at hand.

ולָכֵן יֵדַע עַמִּי שְׁמִי לָכֵן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא כִּי־אֲנִי־הוּא הַמְדַבֵּר הִנֵּנִי׃

7How welcome on the mountain Are the footsteps of the herald Announcing happiness, Heralding good fortune, Announcing victory, Telling Tzion, “Your God is King!”

זמַה־נָּאווּ עַל־הֶהָרִים רַגְלֵי מְבַשֵּׂר מַשְׁמִיעַ שָׁלוֹם מְבַשֵּׂר טוֹב מַשְׁמִיעַ יְשׁוּעָה אֹמֵר לְצִיּוֹן מָלַךְ אֱלֹהָיִךְ׃

8Hark! Your watchmen raise their voices, As one they shout for joy; For every eye shall behold Hashem's return to Tzion.

חקוֹל צֹפַיִךְ נָשְׂאוּ קוֹל יַחְדָּו יְרַנֵּנוּ כִּי עַיִן בְּעַיִן יִרְאוּ בְּשׁוּב יְהֹוָה צִיּוֹן׃

9Raise a shout together, O ruins of Yerushalayim! For Hashem will comfort His people, Will redeem Yerushalayim.

pitz-KHU ra-n'-NU yakh-DAV kho-r'-VOT y'-ru-sha-LA-im kee ni-KHAM a-do-NAI a-MO ga-AL y'-ru-sha-LA-im

טפִּצְחוּ רַנְּנוּ יַחְדָּו חָרְבוֹת יְרוּשָׁלָ ִם כִּי־נִחַם יְהֹוָה עַמּוֹ גָּאַל יְרוּשָׁלָ ִם׃

 52:9   Will redeem Yerushalayim

Hashem has many titles in the Bible, one of which is go-ayl (גואל), ‘redeemer.’ In Isaiah 49:7, He is referred to as the “Redeemer of Israel,” and here He will “redeem Yerushalayim.” The same word is used in the Bible in another context. Sefer Vayikra (25:25) states “his nearest redeemer shall come,” referring to someone so deeply in debt that he is forced to sell his property until his closest relative comes to his aid. The go-ayl in this context is the person’s closest relative. By referring to Hashem as the Redeemer of Israel, the prophet is expressing the idea that He is closer to them than any of their other close relations.

10Hashem will bare His holy arm In the sight of all the nations, And the very ends of earth shall see The victory of our God.

יחָשַׂף יְהֹוָה אֶת־זְרוֹעַ קָדְשׁוֹ לְעֵינֵי כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם וְרָאוּ כָּל־אַפְסֵי־אָרֶץ אֵת יְשׁוּעַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ׃

11Turn, turn away, touch naught unclean As you depart from there; Keep pure, as you go forth from there, You who bear the vessels of Hashem!

יאסוּרוּ סוּרוּ צְאוּ מִשָּׁם טָמֵא אַל־תִּגָּעוּ צְאוּ מִתּוֹכָהּ הִבָּרוּ נֹשְׂאֵי כְּלֵי יְהֹוָה׃

12For you will not depart in haste, Nor will you leave in flight; For Hashem is marching before you, The God of Yisrael is your rear guard.

יבכִּי לֹא בְחִפָּזוֹן תֵּצֵאוּ וּבִמְנוּסָה לֹא תֵלֵכוּן כִּי־הֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיכֶם יְהֹוָה וּמְאַסִּפְכֶם אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

13“Indeed, My servant shall prosper, Be exalted and raised to great heights.

יגהִנֵּה יַשְׂכִּיל עַבְדִּי יָרוּם וְנִשָּׂא וְגָבַהּ מְאֹד׃

14Just as the many were appalled at him— So marred was his appearance, unlike that of man, form, beyond human semblance—

ידכַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמְמוּ עָלֶיךָ רַבִּים כֵּן־מִשְׁחַת מֵאִישׁ מַרְאֵהוּ וְתֹאֲרוֹ מִבְּנֵי אָדָם׃

15Just so he shall startle many nations. Kings shall be silenced because of him, For they shall see what has not been told them, Shall behold what they never have heard.”

טוכֵּן יַזֶּה גּוֹיִם רַבִּים עָלָיו יִקְפְּצוּ מְלָכִים פִּיהֶם כִּי אֲשֶׁר לֹא־סֻפַּר לָהֶם רָאוּ וַאֲשֶׁר לֹא־שָׁמְעוּ הִתְבּוֹנָנוּ׃
