Chapter 12

1In that day, you shall say: “I give thanks to You, Hashem! Although You were wroth with me, Your wrath has turned back and You comfort me,

אוְאָמַרְתָּ בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא אוֹדְךָ יְהֹוָה כִּי אָנַפְתָּ בִּי יָשֹׁב אַפְּךָ וּתְנַחֲמֵנִי׃

2Behold the God who gives me triumph! I am confident, unafraid; For Yah Hashem is my strength and might, And He has been my deliverance.”

בהִנֵּה אֵל יְשׁוּעָתִי אֶבְטַח וְלֹא אֶפְחָד כִּי־עָזִּי וְזִמְרָת יָהּ יְהֹוָה וַיְהִי־לִי לִישׁוּעָה׃

3Joyfully shall you draw water From the fountains of triumph,

גוּשְׁאַבְתֶּם־מַיִם בְּשָׂשׂוֹן מִמַּעַיְנֵי הַיְשׁוּעָה׃

4And you shall say on that day: “Praise Hashem, proclaim His name. Make His deeds known among the peoples; Declare that His name is exalted.

דוַאֲמַרְתֶּם בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא הוֹדוּ לַיהֹוָה קִרְאוּ בִשְׁמוֹ הוֹדִיעוּ בָעַמִּים עֲלִילֹתָיו הַזְכִּירוּ כִּי נִשְׂגָּב שְׁמוֹ׃

5Hymn Hashem, For He has done gloriously; Let this be made known In all the world!

za-m'-RU a-do-NAI KEE gay-UT a-SAH mu-DA-at ZOT b'-khol ha-A-retz

הזַמְּרוּ יְהֹוָה כִּי גֵאוּת עָשָׂה מידעת [מוּדַעַת] זֹאת בְּכָל־הָאָרֶץ׃

12:5 Hymn Hashem, for He has done gloriously

The Talmud (Sanhedrin 94a) states that after Yehuda’s miraculous deliverance from the Assyrian invasion, Hashem desired to crown the righteous king Chizkiyahu as the Mashiach. Only one thing was required — that Chizkiyahu sing a song of praise before Him. Instead, though, Chizkiyahu arose that morning, and continued with his regular daily routine, the study of the Torah, until Yeshayahu instructed him to sing. Unfortunately, as the song was not spontaneous but rather came as a response to a command, the opportunity was lost. In this verse, Yeshayahu teaches the importance of appreciating everything that occurs for us, and being able to sing praise for it before Hashem.
