1Yehoram son of Achav became king of Yisrael in Shomron in the eighteenth year of King Yehoshafat of Yehuda; and he reigned twelve years.
אוִיהוֹרָם בֶּן־אַחְאָב מָלַךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּשֹׁמְרוֹן בִּשְׁנַת שְׁמֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה לִיהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה וַיִּמְלֹךְ שְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה׃
2He did what was displeasing to Hashem, yet not like his father and mother, for he removed the pillars of Baal that his father had made.
בוַיַּעֲשֶׂה הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה רַק לֹא כְאָבִיו וּכְאִמּוֹ וַיָּסַר אֶת־מַצְּבַת הַבַּעַל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה אָבִיו׃
3However, he clung to the sins which Yerovam son of Nebat caused Yisrael to commit; he did not depart from them.
גרַק בְּחַטֹּאות יָרָבְעָם בֶּן־נְבָט אֲשֶׁר־הֶחֱטִיא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל דָּבֵק לֹא־סָר מִמֶּנָּה׃
4Now King Mesha of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he used to pay as tribute to the king of Yisrael a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams.
דוּמֵישַׁע מֶלֶךְ־מוֹאָב הָיָה נֹקֵד וְהֵשִׁיב לְמֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵאָה־אֶלֶף כָּרִים וּמֵאָה אֶלֶף אֵילִים צָמֶר׃
5But when Achav died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Yisrael.
הוַיְהִי כְּמוֹת אַחְאָב וַיִּפְשַׁע מֶלֶךְ־מוֹאָב בְּמֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
6So King Yehoram promptly set out from Shomron and mustered all Yisrael.
ווַיֵּצֵא הַמֶּלֶךְ יְהוֹרָם בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא מִשֹּׁמְרוֹן וַיִּפְקֹד אֶת־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
7At the same time, he sent this message to King Yehoshafat of Yehuda: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me; will you come with me to make war on Moab?” He replied, “I will go. I will do what you do: my troops shall be your troops, my horses shall be your horses.”
זוַיֵּלֶךְ וַיִּשְׁלַח אֶל־יְהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה לֵאמֹר מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב פָּשַׁע בִּי הֲתֵלֵךְ אִתִּי אֶל־מוֹאָב לַמִּלְחָמָה וַיֹּאמֶר אֶעֱלֶה כָּמוֹנִי כָמוֹךָ כְּעַמִּי כְעַמֶּךָ כְּסוּסַי כְּסוּסֶיךָ׃
8And he asked, “Which route shall we take?” [Yehoram] replied, “The road through the wilderness of Edom.”
חוַיֹּאמֶר אֵי־זֶה הַדֶּרֶךְ נַעֲלֶה וַיֹּאמֶר דֶּרֶךְ מִדְבַּר אֱדוֹם׃
9So the king of Yisrael, the king of Yehuda, and the king of Edom set out, and they marched for seven days until they rounded [the tip of the Dead Sea]; and there was no water left for the army or for the animals that were with them.
טוַיֵּלֶךְ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וּמֶלֶך־יְהוּדָה וּמֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם וַיָּסֹבּוּ דֶּרֶךְ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְלֹא־הָיָה מַיִם לַמַּחֲנֶה וְלַבְּהֵמָה אֲשֶׁר בְּרַגְלֵיהֶם׃
10“Alas!” cried the king of Yisrael. “Hashem has brought these three kings together only to deliver them into the hands of Moab.”
יוַיֹּאמֶר מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֲהָהּ כִּי־קָרָא יְהֹוָה לִשְׁלֹשֶׁת הַמְּלָכִים הָאֵלֶּה לָתֵת אוֹתָם בְּיַד־מוֹאָב׃
11But Yehoshafat said, “Isn't there a Navi of Hashem here, through whom we may inquire of Hashem?” One of the courtiers of the king of Yisrael spoke up and said, “Elisha son of Shafat, who poured water on the hands of Eliyahu, is here.”
יאוַיֹּאמֶר יְהוֹשָׁפָט הַאֵין פֹּה נָבִיא לַיהֹוָה וְנִדְרְשָׁה אֶת־יְהֹוָה מֵאוֹתוֹ וַיַּעַן אֶחָד מֵעַבְדֵי מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמֶר פֹּה אֱלִישָׁע בֶּן־שָׁפָט אֲשֶׁר־יָצַק מַיִם עַל־יְדֵי אֵלִיָּהוּ׃
12“The word of Hashem is with him,” said Yehoshafat. So the king of Yisrael and Yehoshafat and the king of Edom went down to him.
יבוַיֹּאמֶר יְהוֹשָׁפָט יֵשׁ אוֹתוֹ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָה וַיֵּרְדוּ אֵלָיו מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוֹשָׁפָט וּמֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם׃
13Elisha said to the king of Yisrael, “What have you to do with me? Go to your father's Neviim or your mother's Neviim.” But the king of Yisrael said, “Don't [say that], for Hashem has brought these three kings together only to deliver them into the hands of Moab.”
יגוַיֹּאמֶר אֱלִישָׁע אֶל־מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל מַה־לִּי וָלָךְ לֵךְ אֶל־נְבִיאֵי אָבִיךָ וְאֶל־נְבִיאֵי אִמֶּךָ וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אַל כִּי־קָרָא יְהֹוָה לִשְׁלֹשֶׁת הַמְּלָכִים הָאֵלֶּה לָתֵת אוֹתָם בְּיַד־מוֹאָב׃
14“As the lord of Hosts lives, whom I serve,” Elisha answered, “were it not that I respect King Yehoshafat of Yehuda, I wouldn't look at you or notice you.
ידוַיֹּאמֶר אֱלִישָׁע חַי־יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת אֲשֶׁר עָמַדְתִּי לְפָנָיו כִּי לוּלֵי פְּנֵי יְהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה אֲנִי נֹשֵׂא אִם־אַבִּיט אֵלֶיךָ וְאִם־אֶרְאֶךָּ׃
15Now then, get me a musician.” As the musician played, the hand of Hashem came upon him,
טווְעַתָּה קְחוּ־לִי מְנַגֵּן וְהָיָה כְּנַגֵּן הַמְנַגֵּן וַתְּהִי עָלָיו יַד־יְהֹוָה׃
16and he said, “Thus said Hashem: This wadi shall be full of pools.
va-YO-mer KOH a-MAR a-do-NAI a-SOH ha-NA-khal ha-ZEH gay-VEEM gay-VEEM
טזוַיֹּאמֶר כֹּה אָמַר יְהֹוָה עָשֹׂה הַנַּחַל הַזֶּה גֵּבִים גֵּבִים׃
3:16 This wadi shall be full of pools

When the kings and their armies face death due to lack of water, Elisha prophesies that the valley will be filled with pools of water. Thus, they will be saved from death, and will be able to quench their thirst. There have been many times in history, from biblical through modern times, when the People of Israel needed miracles in order to have sufficient water. The most famous biblical example is the rock that provided water for the Israelites in the desert. In modern times, one of the many miracles in the creation and prospering of the State of Israel has been the ability to find sufficient water to literally make the desert bloom. For example, Israeli farmers have pioneered innovative drip irrigation methods that have allowed Israel to become leaders in agriculture. Though Israel must conserve water, Hashem has provided it with a sufficient amount to meet all of its needs, and the wisdom to use it efficiently.
17For thus said Hashem: You shall see no wind, you shall see no rain, and yet the wadi shall be filled with water; and you and your cattle and your pack animals shall drink.
יזכִּי־כֹה אָמַר יְהֹוָה לֹא־תִרְאוּ רוּחַ וְלֹא־תִרְאוּ גֶשֶׁם וְהַנַּחַל הַהוּא יִמָּלֵא מָיִם וּשְׁתִיתֶם אַתֶּם וּמִקְנֵיכֶם וּבְהֶמְתְּכֶם׃
18And this is but a slight thing in the sight of Hashem, for He will also deliver Moab into your hands.
יחוְנָקַל זֹאת בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה וְנָתַן אֶת־מוֹאָב בְּיֶדְכֶם׃
19You shall conquer every fortified town and every splendid city; you shall fell every good tree and stop up all wells of water; and every fertile field you shall ruin with stones.”
יטוְהִכִּיתֶם כָּל־עִיר מִבְצָר וְכָל־עִיר מִבְחוֹר וְכָל־עֵץ טוֹב תַּפִּילוּ וְכָל־מַעְיְנֵי־מַיִם תִּסְתֹּמוּ וְכֹל הַחֶלְקָה הַטּוֹבָה תַּכְאִבוּ בָּאֲבָנִים׃
20And in the morning, when it was time to present the meal offering, water suddenly came from the direction of Edom and the land was covered by the water.
כוַיְהִי בַבֹּקֶר כַּעֲלוֹת הַמִּנְחָה וְהִנֵּה־מַיִם בָּאִים מִדֶּרֶךְ אֱדוֹם וַתִּמָּלֵא הָאָרֶץ אֶת־הַמָּיִם׃
21Meanwhile, all the Moabites had heard that the kings were advancing to make war on them; every man old enough to bear arms rallied, and they stationed themselves at the border.
כאוְכָל־מוֹאָב שָׁמְעוּ כִּי־עָלוּ הַמְּלָכִים לְהִלָּחֶם בָּם וַיִּצָּעֲקוּ מִכֹּל חֹגֵר חֲגֹרָה וָמַעְלָה וַיַּעַמְדוּ עַל־הַגְּבוּל׃
22Next morning, when they rose, the sun was shining over the water, and from the distance the water appeared to the Moabites as red as blood.
כבוַיַּשְׁכִּימוּ בַבֹּקֶר וְהַשֶּׁמֶשׁ זָרְחָה עַל־הַמָּיִם וַיִּרְאוּ מוֹאָב מִנֶּגֶד אֶת־הַמַּיִם אֲדֻמִּים כַּדָּם׃
23“That's blood!” they said. “The kings must have fought among themselves and killed each other. Now to the spoil, Moab!”
כגוַיֹּאמְרוּ דָּם זֶה הָחֳרֵב נֶחֶרְבוּ הַמְּלָכִים וַיַּכּוּ אִישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ וְעַתָּה לַשָּׁלָל מוֹאָב׃
24They entered the Israelite camp, and the Israelites arose and attacked the Moabites, who fled before them. They advanced, constantly attacking the Moabites,
כדוַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל־מַחֲנֵה יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיָּקֻמוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיַּכּוּ אֶת־מוֹאָב וַיָּנֻסוּ מִפְּנֵיהֶם ויבו־[וַיַּכּוּ־] בָהּ וְהַכּוֹת אֶת־מוֹאָב׃
25and they destroyed the towns. Every man threw a stone into each fertile field, so that it was covered over; and they stopped up every spring and felled every fruit tree. Only the walls of Kir-hareseth were left, and then the slingers surrounded it and attacked it.
כהוְהֶעָרִים יַהֲרֹסוּ וְכָל־חֶלְקָה טוֹבָה יַשְׁלִיכוּ אִישׁ־אַבְנוֹ וּמִלְאוּהָ וְכָל־מַעְיַן־מַיִם יִסְתֹּמוּ וְכָל־עֵץ־טוֹב יַפִּילוּ עַד־הִשְׁאִיר אֲבָנֶיהָ בַּקִּיר חֲרָשֶׂת וַיָּסֹבּוּ הַקַּלָּעִים וַיַּכּוּהָ׃
26Seeing that the battle was going against him, the king of Moab led an attempt of seven hundred swordsmen to break a way through to the king of Edom; but they failed.
כווַיַּרְא מֶלֶךְ מוֹאָב כִּי־חָזַק מִמֶּנּוּ הַמִּלְחָמָה וַיִּקַּח אוֹתוֹ שְׁבַע־מֵאוֹת אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חֶרֶב לְהַבְקִיעַ אֶל־מֶלֶךְ אֱדוֹם וְלֹא יָכֹלוּ׃
27So he took his first-born son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him up on the wall as a burnt offering. A great wrath came upon Yisrael, so they withdrew from him and went back to [their own] land.
כזוַיִּקַּח אֶת־בְּנוֹ הַבְּכוֹר אֲשֶׁר־יִמְלֹךְ תַּחְתָּיו וַיַּעֲלֵהוּ עֹלָה עַל־הַחֹמָה וַיְהִי קֶצֶף־גָּדוֹל עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּסְעוּ מֵעָלָיו וַיָּשֻׁבוּ לָאָרֶץ׃
