II - Chapter 15

Translation and Transliteration of

1In the twenty-seventh year of King Yerovam of Yisrael, Azarya son of King Amatzya of Yehuda became king.

2He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned fifty-two years in Yerushalayim; his mother's name was Jecoliah of Yerushalayim.

3He did what was pleasing to Hashem, just as his father Amatzya had done.

4However, the shrines were not removed; the people continued to sacrifice and make offerings at the shrines.

5Hashem struck the king with a plague, and he was a leper until the day of his death; he lived in isolated quarters, while Yotam, the king's son, was in charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

6The other events of Azarya's reign, and all his actions, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yehuda.

7Azarya slept with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the City of David; his son Yotam succeeded him as king.

8In the thirty-eighth year of King Azarya of Yehuda, Zecharya son of Yerovam became king over Yisrael in Shomron—for six months.

9He did what was displeasing to Hashem, as his fathers had done; he did not depart from the sins which Yerovam son of Nebat had caused Yisrael to commit.

10Shalum son of Jabesh conspired against him and struck him down before the people and killed him, and succeeded him as king.

11The other events of Zecharya's reign are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yisrael.

12This was in accord with the word that Hashem had spoken to Yehu: “Four generations of your descendants shall occupy the throne of Yisrael.” And so it came about.

13Shalum son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of King Uzziyahu of Yehuda, and he reigned in Shomron one month.

14Then Menachem son of Gadi set out from Tirtza and came to Shomron; he attacked Shalum son of Jabesh in Shomron and killed him, and he succeeded him as king.

va-YA-al m'-na-KHAYM ben ga-DEE mi-tir-TZAH va-ya-VO sho-m'-RON va-YAKH et sha-LUM ben ya-VAYSH b'-sho-m'-RON vai-mee-TAY-hu va-yim-LOKH takh-TAV

15:14   Then Menachem son of Gadi

The name Menacham, meaning ‘he brings comfort,’ is a very special one in Jewish tradition. There is an opinion in the Talmud (Sanhedrin 98b) that the Mashiach will have this name, as his role will be to bring comfort to the Children of Israel and the entire world. The potential for greatness in the name Menachem makes it all the more tragic that this Menachem is so evil.

15The other events of Shalum's reign, and the conspiracy that he formed, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yisrael.

16At that time, [marching] from Tirtza, Menachem subdued Tiphsah and all who were in it, and its territory; and because it did not surrender, he massacred [its people] and ripped open all its pregnant women.

17In the thirty-ninth year of King Azarya of Yehuda, Menachem son of Gadi became king over Yisrael in Shomron—for ten years.

18He did what was displeasing to Hashem; throughout his days he did not depart from the sins which Yerovam son of Nebat had caused Yisrael to commit.

19King Pul of Assyria invaded the land, and Menachem gave Pul a thousand kikarim of silver that he might support him and strengthen his hold on the kingdom.

20Menachem exacted the money from Yisrael: every man of means had to pay fifty shekalim of silver for the king of Assyria. The king of Assyria withdrew and did not remain in the land.

21The other events of Menachem's reign, and all his actions, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yisrael.

22Menachem slept with his fathers, and his son Pekachya succeeded him as king.

23In the fiftieth year of King Azarya of Yehuda, Pekachya son of Menachem became king over Yisrael in Shomron—for two years.

24He did what was displeasing to Hashem; he did not depart from the sins which Yerovam son of Nebat had caused Yisrael to commit.

25His aide, Pekach son of Remaliah, conspired against him and struck him down in the royal palace in Shomron; with him were fifty Giladites, with men from Argob and Arieh; and he killed him and succeeded him as king.

26The other events of Pekachya's reign, and all his actions, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yisrael.

27In the fifty-second year of King Azarya of Yehuda, Pekach son of Remaliah became king over Yisrael and Shomron—for twenty years.

28He did what was displeasing to Hashem; he did not depart from the sins which Yerovam son of Nebat had caused Yisrael to commit.

29In the days of King Pekach of Yisrael, King Tiglath-Pileser of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-bethmaacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor—Gilad, Galilee, the entire region of Naftali; and he deported the inhabitants to Assyria.

30Hoshea son of Eila conspired against Pekach son of Remaliah, attacked him, and killed him. He succeeded him as king in the twentieth year of Yotam son of Uzziyahu.

31The other events of Pekach's reign, and all his actions, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yisrael.

32In the second year of King Pekach son of Remaliah of Yisrael, Yotam son of King Uzziyahu of Yehuda became king.

33He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Yerushalayim; his mother's name was Jerusha daughter of Tzadok.

34He did what was pleasing to Hashem, just as his father Uzziyahu had done.

35However, the shrines were not removed; the people continued to sacrifice and make offerings at the shrines. It was he who built the Upper Gate of the House of Hashem.

36The other events of Yotam's reign, and all his actions, are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of Yehuda.

37In those days, Hashem began to incite King Rezin of Aram and Pekach son of Remaliah against Yehuda.

38Yotam slept with his fathers, and he was buried with his fathers in the city of his ancestor David; his son Achaz succeeded him as king.
