Chapter 8 | The Israel Bible - II - Chapter 8

Translation and Transliteration of  Chapter 8 | The Israel Bible - II - Chapter 8

1At the end of twenty years, during which Shlomo constructed the House of Hashem and his palace—

2Shlomo also rebuilt the cities that Huram had given to him, and settled Israelites in them—

3Shlomo marched against Hamath-zobah and overpowered it.

4He built Tadmor in the desert and all the garrison towns that he built in Hamath.

5He built Upper Beth-horon and Lower Beth-horon as fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars,

6as well as Baalath and all of Shlomo's garrison towns, chariot towns, and cavalry towns—everything that Shlomo desired to build in Yerushalayim and in the Lebanon, and throughout the territory that he ruled.

7All the people that were left of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, none of whom were of Israelite stock—

8those of their descendants who were left after them in the land, whom the Israelites had not annihilated—these Shlomo subjected to forced labor, as is still the case.

9But the Israelites, none of whom Shlomo enslaved for his works, served as soldiers and as his chief officers, and as commanders of his chariotry and cavalry.

10These were King Shlomo's prefects—250 foremen over the people.

11Shlomo brought up Pharaoh's daughter from the City of David to the palace that he had built for her, for he said, “No wife of mine shall dwell in a palace of King David of Yisrael, for [the area] is sacred since the Aron of Hashem has entered it.”

12At that time, Shlomo offered burnt offerings on the mizbayach that he had built in front of the porch.

AZ he-e-LAH sh'-lo-MOH o-LOT la-do-NAI AL miz-BAKH a-do-NAI a-SHER ba-NAH lif-NAY ha-u-LAM

 8:12   On the Mizbayach

The Temple Mount

Once the construction of the Beit Hamikdash was completed, it became forbidden to offer sacrifices to the Lord anywhere else. Though the entire Land of Israel is holy, God desires that His people unite to serve him in one single center of worship. It is in Yerushalayim that the daily offerings, as well as individual offerings and the communal offerings of the Shabbat and festivals, are to be brought. According to Rabbi Yitzchak Abrabanel, having one central place of worship is a constant reminder of the unity of God. In his words, “The oneness of the altar and the Temple point to the oneness of Hashem, Who governs and watches over them.” This was especially important in the ancient pagan world in which the Israelites lived. Indeed, when Yerovam established alternate places of worship to prevent his subjects in the northern Kingdom from worshipping in the Beit Hamikdash, this quickly led to idolatry (I Kings 12:28-30). Today, in the absence of the Temple, we may pray to Hashem wherever we find ourselves. But our prayers are always directed towards the Har HaBayit, the place where the Beit Hamikdash once stood and will again stand in the future.

13What was due for each day he sacrificed according to the commandment of Moshe for the Shabbatot, the new moons, and the thrice-yearly festivals—the festival of Pesach, the festival of Shavuot, and the festival of Sukkot.

14Following the prescription of his father David, he set up the divisions of the Kohanim for their duties, and the Leviim for their watches, to praise and to serve alongside the Kohanim, according to each day's requirement, and the gatekeepers in their watches, gate by gate, for such was the commandment of David, the man of Hashem.

15They did not depart from the commandment of the king relating to the Kohanim and the Leviim in all these matters and also relating to the treasuries.

16And all of Shlomo's work was well executed from the day the House of Hashem was founded until the House of Hashem was completed to perfection.

17At that time Shlomo went to Ezion-geber and to Eloth on the seacoast of the land of Edom.

18Huram sent him, under the charge of servants, a fleet with a crew of expert seamen; they went with Shlomo's men to Ophir, and obtained gold there in the amount of 450 kikarim, which they brought to King Shlomo.
