1Yoshiyahu kept the Pesach for Hashem in Yerushalayim; the Pesach sacrifice was slaughtered on the fourteenth day of the first month.
אוַיַּעַשׂ יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ בִירוּשָׁלַ ִם פֶּסַח לַיהֹוָה וַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ הַפֶּסַח בְּאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר לַחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן׃
2He reinstated the Kohanim in their shifts and rallied them to the service of the House of Hashem.
בוַיַּעֲמֵד הַכֹּהֲנִים עַל־מִשְׁמְרוֹתָם וַיְחַזְּקֵם לַעֲבוֹדַת בֵּית יְהֹוָה׃
3He said to the Leviim, consecrated to Hashem, who taught all Yisrael, “Put the Aron Kodesh in the House that Shlomo son of David, king of Yisrael, built; as you no longer carry it on your shoulders, see now to the service of Hashem your God and His people Yisrael,
גוַיֹּאמֶר לַלְוִיִּם המבונים [הַמְּבִינִים] לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל הַקְּדוֹשִׁים לַיהֹוָה תְּנוּ אֶת־אֲרוֹן־הַקֹּדֶשׁ בַּבַּיִת אֲשֶׁר בָּנָה שְׁלֹמֹה בֶן־דָּוִיד מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אֵין־לָכֶם מַשָּׂא בַּכָּתֵף עַתָּה עִבְדוּ אֶת־יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם וְאֵת עַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל׃
4and dispose yourselves by clans according to your divisions, as prescribed in the writing of King David of Yisrael and in the document of his son Shlomo,
דוְהָכִונוּ לְבֵית־אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם כְּמַחְלְקוֹתֵיכֶם בִּכְתָב דָּוִיד מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל וּבְמִכְתַּב שְׁלֹמֹה בְנוֹ׃
5and attend in the Sanctuary, by clan divisions, on your kinsmen, the people—by clan divisions of the Leviim.
הוְעִמְדוּ בַקֹּדֶשׁ לִפְלֻגּוֹת בֵּית הָאָבוֹת לַאֲחֵיכֶם בְּנֵי הָעָם וַחֲלֻקַּת בֵּית־אָב לַלְוִיִּם׃
6Having sanctified yourselves, slaughter the Pesach sacrifice and prepare it for your kinsmen, according to the word of Hashem given by Moshe.”
ווְשַׁחֲטוּ הַפָּסַח וְהִתְקַדְּשׁוּ וְהָכִינוּ לַאֲחֵיכֶם לַעֲשׂוֹת כִּדְבַר־יְהֹוָה בְּיַד־מֹשֶׁה׃
7Yoshiyahu donated to the people small cattle—lambs and goats, all for Pesach sacrifices for all present—to the sum of 30,000, and large cattle, 3,000—these from the property of the king.
זוַיָּרֶם יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ לִבְנֵי הָעָם צֹאן כְּבָשִׂים וּבְנֵי־עִזִּים הַכֹּל לַפְּסָחִים לְכָל־הַנִּמְצָא לְמִסְפַּר שְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וּבָקָר שְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים אֵלֶּה מֵרְכוּשׁ הַמֶּלֶךְ׃
8His officers gave a freewill offering to the people, to the Kohanim, and to the Leviim. Chilkiyahu and Zecharya and Yechiel, the chiefs of the House of Hashem, donated to the Kohanim for Pesach sacrifices 2,600 [small cattle] and 300 large cattle.
חוְשָׂרָיו לִנְדָבָה לָעָם לַכֹּהֲנִים וְלַלְוִיִּם הֵרִימוּ חִלְקִיָּה וּזְכַרְיָהוּ וִיחִיאֵל נְגִידֵי בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים לַכֹּהֲנִים נָתְנוּ לַפְּסָחִים אַלְפַּיִם וְשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת וּבָקָר שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת׃
9Conaniah, Shemaya, and Nethanel, his brothers, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Yozavad, officers of the Leviim, donated 5,000 [small cattle] and 500 large cattle to the Leviim for Pesach sacrifices.
טוכונניהו [וְכָנַנְיָהוּ] וּשְׁמַעְיָהוּ וּנְתַנְאֵל אֶחָיו וַחֲשַׁבְיָהוּ וִיעִיאֵל וְיוֹזָבָד שָׂרֵי הַלְוִיִּם הֵרִימוּ לַלְוִיִּם לַפְּסָחִים חֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים וּבָקָר חֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת׃
10The service was arranged well: the Kohanim stood at their posts and the Leviim in their divisions, by the king's command.
יוַתִּכּוֹן הָעֲבוֹדָה וַיַּעַמְדוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים עַל־עָמְדָם וְהַלְוִיִּם עַל־מַחְלְקוֹתָם כְּמִצְוַת הַמֶּלֶךְ׃
11They slaughtered the Pesach sacrifice and the Kohanim [received its blood] from them and dashed it, while the Leviim flayed the animals.
יאוַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ הַפָּסַח וַיִּזְרְקוּ הַכֹּהֲנִים מִיָּדָם וְהַלְוִיִּם מַפְשִׁיטִים׃
12They removed the parts to be burnt, distributing them to divisions of the people by clans, and making the sacrifices to Hashem, as prescribed in the scroll of Moshe; they did the same for the cattle.
יבוַיָּסִירוּ הָעֹלָה לְתִתָּם לְמִפְלַגּוֹת לְבֵית־אָבוֹת לִבְנֵי הָעָם לְהַקְרִיב לַיהֹוָה כַּכָּתוּב בְּסֵפֶר מֹשֶׁה וְכֵן לַבָּקָר׃
13They roasted the Pesach sacrifice in fire, as prescribed, while the sacred offerings they cooked in pots, cauldrons, and pans, and conveyed them with dispatch to all the people.
יגוַיְבַשְּׁלוּ הַפֶּסַח בָּאֵשׁ כַּמִּשְׁפָּט וְהַקֳּדָשִׁים בִּשְּׁלוּ בַּסִּירוֹת וּבַדְּוָדִים וּבַצֵּלָחוֹת וַיָּרִיצוּ לְכָל־בְּנֵי הָעָם׃
14Afterward they provided for themselves and the Kohanim, for the Aaronite Kohanim were busy offering the burnt offerings and the fatty parts until nightfall, so the Leviim provided both for themselves and for the Aaronite Kohanim.
ידוְאַחַר הֵכִינוּ לָהֶם וְלַכֹּהֲנִים כִּי הַכֹּהֲנִים בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן בְּהַעֲלוֹת הָעוֹלָה וְהַחֲלָבִים עַד־לָיְלָה וְהַלְוִיִּם הֵכִינוּ לָהֶם וְלַכֹּהֲנִים בְּנֵי אַהֲרֹן׃
15The Asaphite singers were at their stations, by command of David and Asaf and Hayman and Yedutun, the seer of the king; and the gatekeepers were at each and every gate. They did not have to leave their tasks, because their Levite brothers provided for them.
טווְהַמְשֹׁרֲרִים בְּנֵי־אָסָף עַל־מַעֲמָדָם כְּמִצְוַת דָּוִיד וְאָסָף וְהֵימָן וִידֻתוּן חוֹזֵה הַמֶּלֶךְ וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִים לְשַׁעַר וָשָׁעַר אֵין לָהֶם לָסוּר מֵעַל עֲבֹדָתָם כִּי־אֲחֵיהֶם הַלְוִיִּם הֵכִינוּ לָהֶם׃
16The entire service of Hashem was arranged well that day, to keep the Pesach and to make the burnt offerings on the mizbayach of Hashem, according to the command of King Yoshiyahu.
טזוַתִּכּוֹן כָּל־עֲבוֹדַת יְהֹוָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לַעֲשׂוֹת הַפֶּסַח וְהַעֲלוֹת עֹלוֹת עַל מִזְבַּח יְהֹוָה כְּמִצְוַת הַמֶּלֶךְ יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ׃
17All the Israelites present kept the Pesach at that time, and the festival of Pesach for seven days.
יזוַיַּעֲשׂוּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל הַנִּמְצְאִים אֶת־הַפֶּסַח בָּעֵת הַהִיא וְאֶת־חַג הַמַּצּוֹת שִׁבְעַת יָמִים׃
18Since the time of the Navi Shmuel, no Pesach like that one had ever been kept in Yisrael; none of the kings of Yisrael had kept a Pesach like the one kept by Yoshiyahu and the Kohanim and the Leviim and all Yehuda and Yisrael there present and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim.
v'-LO na-a-SAH FE-sakh ka-MO-hu b'-yis-ra-AYL mee-MAY sh'-mu-AYL ha-na-VEE v'-khol mal-KHAY yis-ra-AYL lo a-SU ka-PE-sakh a-SHER a-SAH yo-shi-YA-hu v'-ha-ko-ha-NEEM v'-hal-vi-YIM v'-khol y'-hu-DAH v'-yis-ra-AYL ha-nim-TZA v'-yo-sh'-VAY y'-ru-sha-LA-im
יחוְלֹא־נַעֲשָׂה פֶסַח כָּמֹהוּ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל מִימֵי שְׁמוּאֵל הַנָּבִיא וְכָל־מַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לֹא־עָשׂוּ כַּפֶּסַח אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ וְהַכֹּהֲנִים וְהַלְוִיִּם וְכָל־יְהוּדָה וְיִשְׂרָאֵל הַנִּמְצָא וְיוֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלָ ִם׃
35:18 No Pesach like that one
Like his great-grandfather Chizkiyahu, Yoshiyahu incorporates the Pesach ritual into the process of renewing the covenant with Hashem. However, the verse implies that the Pesach celebration in the time of Yoshiyahu was even greater than that of Chizkiyahu, stating that there had not been a Passover celebration like it since the days of Shmuel. Radak suggests that what made Yoshiyahu’s celebration greater than Chizkiyahu’s was the fact that it was celebrated by “all Yehuda and Yisrael there present.” Whereas many of the remaining members of the kingdom of Yisrael had scorned Chizkiyahu’s invitation to celebrate the Pesach holiday together with the kingdom of Yehuda in Yerushalayim (II Chronicles 30:10), in Yoshiyahu’s time, members of both kingdoms came together wholeheartedly in the service of Hashem. The unity of the Children of Israel is what enhanced the celebration beyond any that had taken place throughout the entire period of the kings.
19That Pesach was kept in the eighteenth year of the reign of Yoshiyahu.
יטבִּשְׁמוֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה לְמַלְכוּת יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ נַעֲשָׂה הַפֶּסַח הַזֶּה׃
20After all this furbishing of the Temple by Yoshiyahu, King Neco of Egypt came up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Yoshiyahu went out against him.
כאַחֲרֵי כָל־זֹאת אֲשֶׁר הֵכִין יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ אֶת־הַבַּיִת עָלָה נְכוֹ מֶלֶךְ־מִצְרַיִם לְהִלָּחֵם בְּכַרְכְּמִישׁ עַל־פְּרָת וַיֵּצֵא לִקְרָאתוֹ יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ׃
21[Neco] sent messengers to him, saying, “What have I to do with you, king of Yehuda? I do not march against you this day but against the kingdom that wars with me, and it is Hashem's will that I hurry. Refrain, then, from interfering with Hashem who is with me, that He not destroy you.”
כאוַיִּשְׁלַח אֵלָיו מַלְאָכִים לֵאמֹר מַה־לִּי וָלָךְ מֶלֶךְ יְהוּדָה לֹא־עָלֶיךָ אַתָּה הַיּוֹם כִּי אֶל־בֵּית מִלְחַמְתִּי וֵאלֹהִים אָמַר לְבַהֲלֵנִי חֲדַל־לְךָ מֵאֱלֹהִים אֲשֶׁר־עִמִּי וְאַל־יַשְׁחִיתֶךָ׃
22But Yoshiyahu would not let him alone; instead, he donned [his armor] to fight him, heedless of Neco's words from the mouth of Hashem; and he came to fight in the plain of Megiddo.
כבוְלֹא־הֵסֵב יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ פָנָיו מִמֶּנּוּ כִּי לְהִלָּחֵם־בּוֹ הִתְחַפֵּשׂ וְלֹא שָׁמַע אֶל־דִּבְרֵי נְכוֹ מִפִּי אֱלֹהִים וַיָּבֹא לְהִלָּחֵם בְּבִקְעַת מְגִדּוֹ׃
23Archers shot King Yoshiyahu, and the king said to his servants, “Get me away from here, for I am badly wounded.”
כגוַיֹּרוּ הַיֹּרִים לַמֶּלֶךְ יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ לַעֲבָדָיו הַעֲבִירוּנִי כִּי הָחֳלֵיתִי מְאֹד׃
24His servants carried him out of his chariot and put him in the wagon of his second-in-command, and conveyed him to Yerushalayim. There he died, and was buried in the grave of his fathers, and all Yehuda and Yerushalayim went into mourning over Yoshiyahu.
כדוַיַּעֲבִירֻהוּ עֲבָדָיו מִן־הַמֶּרְכָּבָה וַיַּרְכִּיבֻהוּ עַל רֶכֶב הַמִּשְׁנֶה אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ וַיּוֹלִיכֻהוּ יְרוּשָׁלַ ִם וַיָּמָת וַיִּקָּבֵר בְּקִבְרוֹת אֲבֹתָיו וְכָל־יְהוּדָה וִירוּשָׁלַ ִם מִתְאַבְּלִים עַל־יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ׃
25Yirmiyahu composed laments for Yoshiyahu which all the singers, male and female, recited in their laments for Yoshiyahu, as is done to this day; they became customary in Yisrael and were incorporated into the laments.
כהוַיְקוֹנֵן יִרְמְיָהוּ עַל־יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ כָל־הַשָּׁרִים וְהַשָּׁרוֹת בְּקִינוֹתֵיהֶם עַל־יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ עַד־הַיּוֹם וַיִּתְּנוּם לְחֹק עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל וְהִנָּם כְּתוּבִים עַל־הַקִּינוֹת׃
26The other events of Yoshiyahu's reign and his faithful deeds, in accord with the Teaching of Hashem,
כווְיֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ וַחֲסָדָיו כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרַת יְהֹוָה׃
27and his acts, early and late, are recorded in the book of the kings of Yisrael and Yehuda.
כזוּדְבָרָיו הָרִאשֹׁנִים וְהָאַחֲרֹנִים הִנָּם כְּתוּבִים עַל־סֵפֶר מַלְכֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל וִיהוּדָה׃
