1Yehoash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Yerushalayim forty years. His mother's name was Zibiah of Be'er Sheva.
אבֶּן־שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים יֹאָשׁ בְּמָלְכוֹ וְאַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה מָלַךְ בִּירוּשָׁלָ ִם וְשֵׁם אִמּוֹ צִבְיָה מִבְּאֵר שָׁבַע׃
2All the days of the Kohen Yehoyada, Yehoash did what was pleasing to Hashem.
בוַיַּעַשׂ יוֹאָשׁ הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה כָּל־יְמֵי יְהוֹיָדָע הַכֹּהֵן׃
3Yehoyada took two wives for him, by whom he had sons and daughters.
גוַיִּשָּׂא־לוֹ יְהוֹיָדָע נָשִׁים שְׁתָּיִם וַיּוֹלֶד בָּנִים וּבָנוֹת׃
4Afterward, Yoash decided to renovate the House of Hashem.
דוַיְהִי אַחֲרֵיכֵן הָיָה עִם־לֵב יוֹאָשׁ לְחַדֵּשׁ אֶת־בֵּית יְהֹוָה׃
5He assembled the Kohanim and the Leviim and charged them as follows: “Go out to the towns of Yehuda and collect money from all Yisrael for the annual repair of the House of your God. Do it quickly.” But the Leviim did not act quickly.
הוַיִּקְבֹּץ אֶת־הַכֹּהֲנִים וְהַלְוִיִּם וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם צְאוּ לְעָרֵי יְהוּדָה וְקִבְצוּ מִכָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל כֶּסֶף לְחַזֵּק אֶת־בֵּית אֱלֹהֵיכֶם מִדֵּי שָׁנָה בְּשָׁנָה וְאַתֶּם תְּמַהֲרוּ לַדָּבָר וְלֹא מִהֲרוּ הַלְוִיִּם׃
6The king summoned Yehoyada the chief and said to him, “Why have you not seen to it that the Leviim brought the tax imposed by Moshe, the servant of Hashem, and the congregation of Yisrael from Yehuda and Yerushalayim to the Tent of the Pact?”
ווַיִּקְרָא הַמֶּלֶךְ לִיהוֹיָדָע הָרֹאשׁ וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ מַדּוּעַ לֹא־דָרַשְׁתָּ עַל־הַלְוִיִּם לְהָבִיא מִיהוּדָה וּמִירוּשָׁלַ ִם אֶת־מַשְׂאַת מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד־יְהֹוָה וְהַקָּהָל לְיִשְׂרָאֵל לְאֹהֶל הָעֵדוּת׃
7For the children of the wicked Atalya had violated the House of Hashem and had even used the sacred things of the House of Hashem for the Baals.
זכִּי עֲתַלְיָהוּ הַמִּרְשַׁעַת בָּנֶיהָ פָרְצוּ אֶת־בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים וְגַם כָּל־קָדְשֵׁי בֵית־יְהֹוָה עָשׂוּ לַבְּעָלִים׃
8The king ordered that a chest be made and placed on the outside of the gate of the House of Hashem.
חוַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיַּעֲשׂוּ אֲרוֹן אֶחָד וַיִּתְּנֻהוּ בְּשַׁעַר בֵּית־יְהֹוָה חוּצָה׃
9A proclamation was issued in Yehuda and Yerushalayim to bring the tax imposed on Yisrael in the wilderness by Moshe, the servant of Hashem.
טוַיִּתְּנוּ־קוֹל בִּיהוּדָה וּבִירוּשָׁלַ ִם לְהָבִיא לַיהֹוָה מַשְׂאַת מֹשֶׁה עֶבֶד־הָאֱלֹהִים עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵל בַּמִּדְבָּר׃
10All the officers and all the people gladly brought it and threw it into the chest till it was full.
יוַיִּשְׂמְחוּ כָל־הַשָּׂרִים וְכָל־הָעָם וַיָּבִיאוּ וַיַּשְׁלִיכוּ לָאָרוֹן עַד־לְכַלֵּה׃
11Whenever the chest was brought to the royal officers by the Leviim, and they saw that it contained much money, the royal scribe and the agent of the chief Kohen came and emptied out the chest and carried it back to its place. They did this day by day, and much money was collected.
יאוַיְהִי בְּעֵת יָבִיא אֶת־הָאָרוֹן אֶל־פְּקֻדַּת הַמֶּלֶךְ בְּיַד הַלְוִיִּם וְכִרְאוֹתָם כִּי־רַב הַכֶּסֶף וּבָא סוֹפֵר הַמֶּלֶךְ וּפְקִיד כֹּהֵן הָרֹאשׁ וִיעָרוּ אֶת־הָאָרוֹן וְיִשָּׂאֻהוּ וִישִׁיבֻהוּ אֶל־מְקֹמוֹ כֹּה עָשׂוּ לְיוֹם בְּיוֹם וַיַּאַסְפוּ־כֶסֶף לָרֹב׃
12The king and Yehoyada delivered the money to those who oversaw the tasks connected with the work of the House of Hashem. They hired masons and carpenters to renovate the House of Hashem, as well as craftsmen in iron and bronze to repair the House of Hashem.
יבוַיִּתְּנֵהוּ הַמֶּלֶךְ וִיהוֹיָדָע אֶל־עוֹשֵׂה מְלֶאכֶת עֲבוֹדַת בֵּית־יְהֹוָה וַיִּהְיוּ שֹׂכְרִים חֹצְבִים וְחָרָשִׁים לְחַדֵּשׁ בֵּית יְהֹוָה וְגַם לְחָרָשֵׁי בַרְזֶל וּנְחֹשֶׁת לְחַזֵּק אֶת־בֵּית יְהֹוָה׃
13The overseers did their work; under them the work went well and they restored the House of Hashem to its original form and repaired it.
יגוַיַּעֲשׂוּ עֹשֵׂי הַמְּלָאכָה וַתַּעַל אֲרוּכָה לַמְּלָאכָה בְּיָדָם וַיַּעֲמִידוּ אֶת־בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים עַל־מַתְכֻּנְתּוֹ וַיְאַמְּצֻהוּ׃
14When they had finished, they brought the money that was left over to the king and Yehoyada; it was made into utensils for the House of Hashem, service vessels: buckets and ladles, golden and silver vessels. Burnt offerings were offered up regularly in the House of Hashem all the days of Yehoyada.
ידוּכְכַלּוֹתָם הֵבִיאוּ לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ וִיהוֹיָדָע אֶת־שְׁאָר הַכֶּסֶף וַיַּעֲשֵׂהוּ כֵלִים לְבֵית־יְהֹוָה כְּלֵי שָׁרֵת וְהַעֲלוֹת וְכַפּוֹת וּכְלֵי זָהָב וָכָסֶף וַיִּהְיוּ מַעֲלִים עֹלוֹת בְּבֵית־יְהֹוָה תָּמִיד כֹּל יְמֵי יְהוֹיָדָע׃
15Yehoyada reached a ripe old age and died; he was one hundred and thirty years old at his death.
טווַיִּזְקַן יְהוֹיָדָע וַיִּשְׂבַּע יָמִים וַיָּמֹת בֶּן־מֵאָה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים שָׁנָה בְּמוֹתוֹ׃
16They buried him in the City of David together with the kings, because he had done good in Yisrael, and on behalf of Hashem and His House.
va-yik-b'-RU-hu v'-EER da-VEED im ha-m'-la-KHEEM kee a-SAH to-VAH b'-yis-ra-AYL v'-im ha-e-lo-HEEM u-vay-TO
טזוַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּ בְעִיר־דָּוִיד עִם־הַמְּלָכִים כִּי־עָשָׂה טוֹבָה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל וְעִם הָאֱלֹהִים וּבֵיתוֹ׃
24:16 Because he had done good in Yisrael
Yehoyada is buried “with the kings” even though he is not a member of the royal family. He is the only outsider recorded as being buried among the kingly descendants of David, something that even some of the actual kings, such as Yehoram, did not merit. Metzudat David explains that this is part of his reward for having “done good in Yisrael” in three ways. He appointed a king from the line of David, he brought the people back to Hashem and he restored the Beit Hamikdash. Yehoyada is buried with the kings because he acted in a manner expected of a king, even to the point of risking his own life, and the lives of his family members, for the sake of God and the Nation of Israel.
17But after the death of Yehoyada, the officers of Yehuda came, bowing low to the king; and the king listened to them.
יזוְאַחֲרֵי מוֹת יְהוֹיָדָע בָּאוּ שָׂרֵי יְהוּדָה וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ לַמֶּלֶךְ אָז שָׁמַע הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲלֵיהֶם׃
18They forsook the House of God of their fathers to serve the sacred posts and idols; and there was wrath upon Yehuda and Yerushalayim because of this guilt of theirs.
יחוַיַּעַזְבוּ אֶת־בֵּית יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵיהֶם וַיַּעַבְדוּ אֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִים וְאֶת־הָעֲצַבִּים וַיְהִי־קֶצֶף עַל־יְהוּדָה וִירוּשָׁלַ ִם בְּאַשְׁמָתָם זֹאת׃
19Hashem sent Neviim among them to bring them back to Him; they admonished them but they would not pay heed.
יטוַיִּשְׁלַח בָּהֶם נְבִאִים לַהֲשִׁיבָם אֶל־יְהֹוָה וַיָּעִידוּ בָם וְלֹא הֶאֱזִינוּ׃
20Then the spirit of Hashem enveloped Zecharya son of Yehoyada the kohen; he stood above the people and said to them, “Thus Hashem said: Why do you transgress the commandments of Hashem when you cannot succeed? Since you have forsaken Hashem, He has forsaken you.”
כוְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים לָבְשָׁה אֶת־זְכַרְיָה בֶּן־יְהוֹיָדָע הַכֹּהֵן וַיַּעֲמֹד מֵעַל לָעָם וַיֹּאמֶר לָהֶם כֹּה אָמַר הָאֱלֹהִים לָמָה אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים אֶת־מִצְוׂת יְהֹוָה וְלֹא תַצְלִיחוּ כִּי־עֲזַבְתֶּם אֶת־יְהֹוָה וַיַּעֲזֹב אֶתְכֶם׃
21They conspired against him and pelted him with stones in the court of the House of Hashem, by order of the king.
כאוַיִּקְשְׁרוּ עָלָיו וַיִּרְגְּמֻהוּ אֶבֶן בְּמִצְוַת הַמֶּלֶךְ בַּחֲצַר בֵּית יְהֹוָה׃
22King Yoash disregarded the loyalty that his father Yehoyada had shown to him, and killed his son. As he was dying, he said, “May Hashem see and requite it.”
כבוְלֹא־זָכַר יוֹאָשׁ הַמֶּלֶךְ הַחֶסֶד אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה יְהוֹיָדָע אָבִיו עִמּוֹ וַיַּהֲרֹג אֶת־בְּנוֹ וּכְמוֹתוֹ אָמַר יֵרֶא יְהֹוָה וְיִדְרֹשׁ׃
23At the turn of the year, the army of Aram marched against him; they invaded Yehuda and Yerushalayim, and wiped out all the officers of the people from among the people, and sent all the booty they took to the king of Damascus.
כגוַיְהִי לִתְקוּפַת הַשָּׁנָה עָלָה עָלָיו חֵיל אֲרָם וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל־יְהוּדָה וִירוּשָׁלַ ִם וַיַּשְׁחִיתוּ אֶת־כָּל־שָׂרֵי הָעָם מֵעָם וְכָל־שְׁלָלָם שִׁלְּחוּ לְמֶלֶךְ דַּרְמָשֶׂק׃
24The invading army of Aram had come with but a few men, but Hashem delivered a very large army into their hands, because they had forsaken God of their fathers. They inflicted punishments on Yoash.
כדכִּי בְמִצְעַר אֲנָשִׁים בָּאוּ חֵיל אֲרָם וַיהֹוָה נָתַן בְּיָדָם חַיִל לָרֹב מְאֹד כִּי עָזְבוּ אֶת־יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵיהֶם וְאֶת־יוֹאָשׁ עָשׂוּ שְׁפָטִים׃
25When they withdrew, having left him with many wounds, his courtiers plotted against him because of the murder of the sons of Yehoyada the kohen, and they killed him in bed. He died and was buried in the City of David; he was not buried in the tombs of the kings.
כהוּבְלֶכְתָּם מִמֶּנּוּ כִּי־עָזְבוּ אֹתוֹ במחליים [בְּמַחֲלוּיִם] רַבִּים הִתְקַשְּׁרוּ עָלָיו עֲבָדָיו בִּדְמֵי בְּנֵי יְהוֹיָדָע הַכֹּהֵן וַיַּהַרְגֻהוּ עַל־מִטָּתוֹ וַיָּמֹת וַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּ בְּעִיר דָּוִיד וְלֹא קְבָרֻהוּ בְּקִבְרוֹת הַמְּלָכִים׃
26These were the men who conspired against him: Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
כווְאֵלֶּה הַמִּתְקַשְּׁרִים עָלָיו זָבָד בֶּן־שִׁמְעָת הָעַמּוֹנִית וִיהוֹזָבָד בֶּן־שִׁמְרִית הַמּוֹאָבִית׃
27As to his sons, and the many pronouncements against him, and his rebuilding of the House of Hashem, they are recorded in the story in the book of the kings. His son Amatzya succeeded him as king.
כזוּבָנָיו ורב [יִרֶב] הַמַּשָּׂא עָלָיו וִיסוֹד בֵּית הָאֱלֹהִים הִנָּם כְּתוּבִים עַל־מִדְרַשׁ סֵפֶר הַמְּלָכִים וַיִּמְלֹךְ אֲמַצְיָהוּ בְנוֹ תַּחְתָּיו׃
