II - Chapter 21

1Yehoshafat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the City of David; his son Yehoram succeeded him as king.

אוַיִּשְׁכַּב יְהוֹשָׁפָט עִם־אֲבֹתָיו וַיִּקָּבֵר עִם־אֲבֹתָיו בְּעִיר דָּוִיד וַיִּמְלֹךְ יְהוֹרָם בְּנוֹ תַּחְתָּיו׃

2He had brothers, sons of Yehoshafat: Azarya, Yechiel, Zecharya, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were sons of King Yehoshafat of Yisrael.

בוְלוֹ־אַחִים בְּנֵי יְהוֹשָׁפָט עֲזַרְיָה וִיחִיאֵל וּזְכַרְיָהוּ וַעֲזַרְיָהוּ וּמִיכָאֵל וּשְׁפַטְיָהוּ כָּל־אֵלֶּה בְּנֵי יְהוֹשָׁפָט מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

3Their father gave them many gifts of silver, gold, and [other] presents, as well as fortified towns in Yehuda, but he gave the kingdom to Yehoram because he was the first-born.

גוַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם אֲבִיהֶם מַתָּנוֹת רַבּוֹת לְכֶסֶף וּלְזָהָב וּלְמִגְדָּנוֹת עִם־עָרֵי מְצֻרוֹת בִּיהוּדָה וְאֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה נָתַן לִיהוֹרָם כִּי־הוּא הַבְּכוֹר׃

4Yehoram proceeded to take firm hold of his father's kingdom and put to the sword all his brothers, as well as some of the officers of Yisrael.

דוַיָּקָם יְהוֹרָם עַל־מַמְלֶכַת אָבִיו וַיִּתְחַזַּק וַיַּהֲרֹג אֶת־כָּל־אֶחָיו בֶּחָרֶב וְגַם מִשָּׂרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

5Yehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Yerushalayim eight years.

הבֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם שָׁנָה יְהוֹרָם בְּמָלְכוֹ וּשְׁמוֹנֶה שָׁנִים מָלַךְ בִּירוּשָׁלָ ִם׃

6He followed the practices of the kings of Yisrael doing what the House of Achav had done, for he married a daughter of Achav; he did what was displeasing to Hashem.

ווַיֵּלֶךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ מַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשׂוּ בֵּית אַחְאָב כִּי בַּת־אַחְאָב הָיְתָה לּוֹ אִשָּׁה וַיַּעַשׂ הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהֹוָה׃

7However, Hashem refrained from destroying the House of David for the sake of the covenant he had made with David, and in accordance with his promise to maintain a lamp for him and his descendants for all time.

זוְלֹא־אָבָה יְהֹוָה לְהַשְׁחִית אֶת־בֵּית דָּוִיד לְמַעַן הַבְּרִית אֲשֶׁר כָּרַת לְדָוִיד וְכַאֲשֶׁר אָמַר לָתֵת לוֹ נִיר וּלְבָנָיו כָּל־הַיָּמִים׃

8During his reign, the Edomites rebelled against Yehuda's rule and set up a king of their own.

חבְּיָמָיו פָּשַׁע אֱדוֹם מִתַּחַת יַד־יְהוּדָה וַיַּמְלִיכוּ עֲלֵיהֶם מֶלֶךְ׃

9Yehoram advanced [against them] with his officers and all his chariotry. He arose by night and attacked the Edomites, who surrounded him and the chariot commanders.

טוַיַּעֲבֹר יְהוֹרָם עִם־שָׂרָיו וְכָל־הָרֶכֶב עִמּוֹ וַיְהִי קָם לַיְלָה וַיַּךְ אֶת־אֱדוֹם הַסּוֹבֵב אֵלָיו וְאֵת שָׂרֵי הָרָכֶב׃

10Edom has been in rebellion against Yehuda, to this day; Libnah also rebelled against him at that time, because he had forsaken God of his fathers.

יוַיִּפְשַׁע אֱדוֹם מִתַּחַת יַד־יְהוּדָה עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה אָז תִּפְשַׁע לִבְנָה בָּעֵת הַהִיא מִתַּחַת יָדוֹ כִּי עָזַב אֶת־יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתָיו׃

11Moreover, he built shrines in the hill country of Yehuda; he led astray the inhabitants of Yerushalayim and made Yehuda wayward.

יאגַּם־הוּא עָשָׂה־בָמוֹת בְּהָרֵי יְהוּדָה וַיֶּזֶן אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלַ ִם וַיַּדַּח אֶת־יְהוּדָה׃

12A letter from Eliyahu the Navi came to him which read, “Thus says God of your father David: Since you have not followed the practices of your father Yehoshafat and the practices of King Asa of Yehuda,

יבוַיָּבֹא אֵלָיו מִכְתָּב מֵאֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא לֵאמֹר כֹּה אָמַר יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי דָּוִיד אָבִיךָ תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר לֹא־הָלַכְתָּ בְּדַרְכֵי יְהוֹשָׁפָט אָבִיךָ וּבְדַרְכֵי אָסָא מֶלֶךְ־יְהוּדָה׃

13but have followed the practices of the kings of Yisrael, leading astray Yehuda and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim as the House of Achav led them astray, and have also killed your brothers of your father's house, who were better than you,

יגוַתֵּלֶךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ מַלְכֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַתַּזְנֶה אֶת־יְהוּדָה וְאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלַ ִם כְּהַזְנוֹת בֵּית אַחְאָב וְגַם אֶת־אַחֶיךָ בֵית־אָבִיךָ הַטּוֹבִים מִמְּךָ הָרָגְתָּ׃

14therefore, Hashem will inflict a great blow upon your people, your sons, and your wives and all your possessions.

ידהִנֵּה יְהֹוָה נֹגֵף מַגֵּפָה גְדוֹלָה בְּעַמֶּךָ וּבְבָנֶיךָ וּבְנָשֶׁיךָ וּבְכָל־רְכוּשֶׁךָ׃

15As for you, you will be severely stricken with a disorder of the bowels year after year until your bowels drop out.”

טווְאַתָּה בָּחֳלָיִים רַבִּים בְּמַחֲלֵה מֵעֶיךָ עַד־יֵצְאוּ מֵעֶיךָ מִן־הַחֹלִי יָמִים עַל־יָמִים׃

16Hashem stirred up the spirit of the Philistines and the Arabs who were neighbors of the Cushites against Yehoram.

טזוַיָּעַר יְהֹוָה עַל־יְהוֹרָם אֵת רוּחַ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּים וְהָעַרְבִים אֲשֶׁר עַל־יַד כּוּשִׁים׃

17They marched against Yehuda, breached its defenses, and carried off all the property that was found in the king's palace, as well as his sons and his wives. The only son who remained was Yehoachaz, his youngest.

יזוַיַּעֲלוּ בִיהוּדָה וַיִּבְקָעוּהָ וַיִּשְׁבּוּ אֵת כָּל־הָרְכוּשׁ הַנִּמְצָא לְבֵית־הַמֶּלֶךְ וְגַם־בָּנָיו וְנָשָׁיו וְלֹא נִשְׁאַר־לוֹ בֵּן כִּי אִם־יְהוֹאָחָז קְטֹן בָּנָיו׃

18After this, Hashem afflicted him with an incurable disease of the bowels.

יחוְאַחֲרֵי כָּל־זֹאת נְגָפוֹ יְהֹוָה בְּמֵעָיו לָחֳלִי לְאֵין מַרְפֵּא׃

19Some years later, when a period of two years had elapsed, his bowels dropped out because of his disease, and he died a gruesome death. His people did not make a fire for him like the fire for his fathers.

יטוַיְהִי לְיָמִים מִיָּמִים וּכְעֵת צֵאת הַקֵּץ לְיָמִים שְׁנַיִם יָצְאוּ מֵעָיו עִם־חָלְיוֹ וַיָּמָת בְּתַחֲלֻאִים רָעִים וְלֹא־עָשׂוּ לוֹ עַמּוֹ שְׂרֵפָה כִּשְׂרֵפַת אֲבֹתָיו׃

20He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Yerushalayim eight years. He departed unpraised, and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

ben sh'-lo-SHEEM ush-TA-yim ha-YAH v'-mol-KHO ush-mo-NEH sha-NEEM ma-LAKH bee-ru-sha-LA-im va-YAY-lekh b'-LO khem-DAH va-yik-b'-RU-hu b'-EER da-VEED v'-LO b'-kiv-ROT ha-m'-la-KHEEM

כבֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁים וּשְׁתַּיִם הָיָה בְמָלְכוֹ וּשְׁמוֹנֶה שָׁנִים מָלַךְ בִּירוּשָׁלָ ִם וַיֵּלֶךְ בְּלֹא חֶמְדָּה וַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּ בְּעִיר דָּוִיד וְלֹא בְּקִבְרוֹת הַמְּלָכִים׃
