 3:4   And in Yerushalayim he reigned thirty-three years

Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952)

The text delineates exactly how many years of David’s reign were spent ruling in Chevron, and how many in Yerushalayim, because ruling in Yerushalayim, Hashem’s chosen city, is qualitatively different than ruling anywhere else, even another city in Eretz Yisrael. Yerushalayim is the center of the world and the holiest place on earth. In December 1948, the first president of Israel, Chaim Weizmann, passionately declared: “Jerusalem holds a unique place in the heart of every Jew. Jerusalem is to us the quintessence of the Palestine idea. Its restoration symbolizes the redemption of Israel… To us Jerusalem has both a spiritual and a temporal significance. It is the City of God, the seat of our ancient sanctuary. But it is also the capital of David and Solomon, the City of the Great King, the metropolis of our ancient commonwealth… It is the center of our ancient national glory. It was our lodestar in all our wanderings. It embodies all that is noblest in our hopes for the future. Jerusalem is the eternal mother of the Jewish people, precious and beloved even in its desolation. When David made Jerusalem the capital of Judea, on that day there began the Jewish Commonwealth…It seems inconceivable that the establishment of a Jewish State in Palestine should be accompanied by the detachment from it of its spiritual center and historical capital.”

5These were born to him in Yerushalayim: Shimea, Shobab, Natan, and Shlomo, four by Bathshua daughter of Ammiel;
