1You shall make the mizbayach of acacia wood, five amot long and five amot wide—the mizbayach is to be square—and three amot high.
2Make its horns on the four corners, the horns to be of one piece with it; and overlay it with copper.
3Make the pails for removing its ashes, as well as its scrapers, basins, flesh hooks, and fire pans—make all its utensils of copper.
4Make for it a grating of meshwork in copper; and on the mesh make four copper rings at its four corners.
5Set the mesh below, under the ledge of the mizbayach, so that it extends to the middle of the mizbayach.
6And make poles for the mizbayach, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with copper.
7The poles shall be inserted into the rings, so that the poles remain on the two sides of the mizbayach when it is carried.
8Make it hollow, of boards. As you were shown on the mountain, so shall they be made.

27:8 Hollow, of boards
The altar is constructed from hollow boards that are filled with earth whenever the Israelites camp and reassemble the Mishkan in the desert. Only once the nation reaches Eretz Yisrael is a permanent, solid altar of stone constructed. These hollow planks reflect the transitory life of the Israelites in the desert. Only once they reach the Land of Israel can they finally settle into their permanent home. This is a timeless message to Jews in exile: Life outside of Israel should be seen as temporary, and homes and businesses should be built accordingly. The Land of Israel is the only truly permanent home for the People of Israel.
9You shall make the enclosure of the Mishkan: On the south side, a hundred amot of hangings of fine twisted linen for the length of the enclosure on that side
10with its twenty posts and their twenty sockets of copper, the hooks and bands of the posts to be of silver.
11Again a hundred amot of hangings for its length along the north side—with its twenty posts and their twenty sockets of copper, the hooks and bands of the posts to be of silver.
12For the width of the enclosure, on the west side, fifty amot of hangings, with their ten posts and their ten sockets.
13For the width of the enclosure on the front, or east side, fifty amot:
14fifteen amot of hangings on the one flank, with their three posts and their three sockets;
15fifteen amot of hangings on the other flank, with their three posts and their three sockets;
16and for the gate of the enclosure, a screen of twenty amot, of blue, purple, and crimson yarns, and fine twisted linen, done in embroidery, with their four posts and their four sockets.
17All the posts round the enclosure shall be banded with silver and their hooks shall be of silver; their sockets shall be of copper.
18The length of the enclosure shall be a hundred amot, and the width fifty throughout; and the height five amot—[with hangings] of fine twisted linen. The sockets shall be of copper:
19all the utensils of the Mishkan, for all its service, as well as all its pegs and all the pegs of the court, shall be of copper.
20You shall further instruct the Israelites to bring you clear oil of beaten olives for lighting, for kindling lamps regularly.
21Aharon and his sons shall set them up in the Tent of Meeting, outside the curtain which is over [the Aron of] the Pact, [to burn] from evening to morning before Hashem. It shall be a due from the Israelites for all time, throughout the ages.
