1Ah, you who are at ease in Tzion And confident on the hill of Shomron, You notables of the leading nation On whom the House of Yisrael pin their hopes:
HOY ha-sha-a-na-NEEM b'-tzi-YON v'-ha-bo-t'-KHEEM b'-HAR sho-m'-RON n'-ku-VAY ray-SHEET ha-go-YIM u-VA-u la-HEM BAYT yis-ra-AYL
6:1 And confident on the hill of Shomron

The hills of Shomron
While the poor suffer under heavy taxation and injustice, the rich remain blissfully unaware of the conditions outside their palaces and the impending doom that awaits them. Shomron was situated in the central hills of the country, surrounded by an array of mountains, which gave its inhabitants a feeling of security. Amos uses this geographical fact to mock the leadership’s lack of awareness of the events transpiring on the other side of these mountains.
2Cross over to Calneh and see, Go from there to Great Hamath, And go down to Gath of the Philistines: Are [you] better than those kingdoms, Or is their territory larger than yours?
3Yet you ward off [the thought of] a day of woe And convene a session of lawlessness.
4They lie on ivory beds, Lolling on their couches, Feasting on lambs from the flock And on calves from the stalls.
5They hum snatches of song To the tune of the lute— They account themselves musicians like David.
6They drink [straight] from the wine bowls And anoint themselves with the choicest oils— But they are not concerned about the ruin of Yosef.
7Assuredly, right soon They shall head the column of exiles; They shall loll no more at festive meals.
8My Hashem swears by Himself: I loathe the Pride of Yaakov, And I detest his fortresses. I will declare forfeit city and inhabitants alike —declares Hashem, the God of Hosts.
9If ten people are left in one house, they shall die.
10And if someone's kinsman—who is to burn incense for him—comes to carry the remains out of a house, and he calls to the one at the rear of the house, “Are there any alive besides you?” he will answer, “No, none.” And he will say, “Hush!”—so that no one may utter the name of Hashem.
11For Hashem will command, And the great house shall be smashed to bits, And the little house to splinters.
12Can horses gallop on a rock? Can it be plowed with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison weed And the fruit of righteousness to wormwood.
13[Ah,] those who are so happy about Lo-dabar, Who exult, “By our might We have captured Karnaim”!
14But I, O House of Yisrael, Will raise up a nation against you —declares Hashem, the God of Hosts— Who will harass you from Lebo-Hamath To the Wadi Arabah. 1
